in the situation do you really need that background? if not, bring down the curtains, or soften the incoming light. or change angle of subject else its flash (you will probably need HSS), or HDR

oh that was artifact with doing a HDR on that photo.. but the enhancement made it that way... Kinda like it as it reminds me of the senkai gate/garganta in the Jap Anime Bleach.. where the hollows climb out from :P

no not really. HDR basically means high dynamic range. you just need to lift the shadows out of dark areas. A raw file typically covers 4-5 stops of light. say you shoot a properly exposed image, you can increase exposure by 1 stop or down by 1 stop. which you then save and now you have 3...
