Perharp u can try ur hand on MF and u will understand. By adjusting the focus,u can focus on the near/far object..With a big aperture,u can blur out background/bring out the focus on the subject..

TS has stated that the lens need not be fast or top notch quality,all he wan is more zoom.. So i dun tink tamron 17-50 address the more zoom issue. Perharps a 18-135 or 18-200mm is more appropriate.

Hmm..longer focal length for 50mm prime? Tink u can achieve thin DOF just by opening the aperture to F/1.8 or F/2 (wide open).. The higher it goes,f/8,f/11,f/22(smaller aperture(, the deeper the DOF.
