Kit lens will do for both landscapes and portraits. U can try e cheap 50mm f1.8 for portraits, pretty good. Shoot more wif Ur kit lens then know your preferred genre and focal length. From there on, then decide on which lens to add on. ^^

I agree with rashkae, If I use e default setting for my 60d w/o boosting it's sat n colour, it turns out to be pretty neutral, have see. Nikon's images on e lcd screen, have not compare on e same pc. But what I have heard abt nikon n canon is pretty much e same as rashkae.
