it's ok to start without one, but you'll really need a strobe to take any reasonably good u/w photos. i got the cheapest there's out there - the Sunpak G-Flash. i use it with my a70 setup - that must be the cheapest setup one can get for u/w for the moment. you can check here for some...

finally found an adapter to use the TC80N3 on 350D/300D... http://www.werbeagentur.org/oldwexi/TC80N3.html and it cost.... usd30 shipped...cable only!

was considering the 720sw as a replacement to my a70 in a casing. it's so small and compact, no need box for pool, snorkling and outdoor-sports duties with hopefully better chance of survival in case the box is flooded. too good to be true? then i read some -ve reviews on poor image quality...

you must be referring to the SL960 - look mom, no D ;) it doesn't come with an optical cable and its brightness doesn't seem to be adjustable. otherwise, for 1/2 the price of a SL960D, i don't mind cutting the diffuser plate. i think it may be a good 2nd strobe to light the background with...

i have this experience too but later i found that it doesn't happen when i flip photos using the scroll wheel behind the shuttle release instead of the buttons at the back. the wheel gives a more solid feel since there's a catch for every step and imho more ergonomic to use because i) one wheel...
