yup, your 2k budget is pretty good enough for max either Canon 50D or Nikon D90, both with kit lens. Or you could settle down with a slightly lower price body, such as Canon 500D or Nikon D5000 then get yourself more options by spending a bit on lenses, such as 50mm for a start or a tele ;p
