the standard kit lens would be 18-55 or 18-105 for a D90. and I know there are certain compacts which have very decent lens on them, like the canon s90 or lumix lx3. That being said, the kit lens is still decent for everything.

There are no good brands. Because all the brands have cameras that could produce good photos. You have to consider this: You want a multi purpose camera, but DSLR would require you to spend quite some money to get that "multi-purpose" feature. If you were to look at high end compact...

Consider the 50 f1.4D or 50 f1.8D or 35 f1.8G if you are thinking of an FF upgrade that you can't predict when will happen.

100% coverage may not be necessary for casual shooters. A bigger viewfinder would be more practical imo.
