After you installed it, it'll still say User def.1 or user def.2 etc. But next to it it would also say CLEAR or SNAPSHOT etc. In capitals too. When you install a picture style with the EOS utility you have to pick a user def to be replaced. PS: Bye 1000D thread. I returned the 1000D for Nikon...
