If you are more into portraits, how about prime lens such as 85mm, 105 or 135mm? They're cheaper. lighter and not as bulky compared to 70-200 and produce very nice bokeh from what I seen and read. Check your photos to see which range you use the most and buy that prime. You can always use 18-200...

At your budget you will most likely have to get 2nd lenses for both. For mid range, Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 garner many good reviews. Just be aware of focus and flash over exposure issue when you buy. Local new set is about $600ish. For wide, I think Sigma 10-20 is still the widest for crop sensor.
