Hi,
Just wondering is there anyone using Zoom H1n as a external mic for the dslr? Can it connect to the dslr ?
Not advisable for three reasons:
1. It has a bi-cardiod pick-up pattern. Good if you want plenty of stereo ambient but not for dialogue, especially if you are mounting on camera.
2. The only audio out is a 3.5mm minijack. Not recommended as a boom mic attached via cable to camera as it is unbalanced (the longer the cable, the more noise) and filmsy.
3. Mic input jack of the H1 has a small EMF current for electret mic. This driver is always on and cannot be disabled. Hence, not recommended as a dual system safety recorder either as the EMF will create interference in the camera via any split connection from your other mics.
The better option is the Shure lenshopper recorder if you are using a Nikon, Sony, or Lumix DSLR wiith no headphone jack.

Monitor via the lenshopper.
For DSLRS with headphone jacks or Canon DSLRs that support magic lantern firmware, you can go with the rode videomic and this hack

The Rode is cheaper and way better than the lenshopper in terms of off-axis isolation but it is only a mic and has no built-in recorder.
Rode's version of the lenshopper is still vaporware. (Or is it the other way round since rode announced the HD first?) So don't hold your breath!
