Hi,

Not advisable for three reasons:

1. It has a bi-cardiod pick-up pattern. Good if you want plenty of stereo ambient but not for dialogue, especially if you are mounting on camera.
2. The only audio out is a 3.5mm minijack. Not recommended as a boom mic attached via cable to camera as it is unbalanced (the longer the cable, the more noise) and filmsy.
3. Mic input jack of the H1 has a small EMF current for electret mic. This driver is always on and cannot be disabled. Hence, not recommended as a dual system safety recorder either as the EMF will create interference in the camera via any split connection from your other mics.

The better option is the Shure lenshopper recorder if you are using a Nikon, Sony, or Lumix DSLR wiith no headphone jack. http://www.shure.com/americas/products/microphones/vp/vp83f
Monitor via the lenshopper.
For DSLRS with headphone jacks or Canon DSLRs that support magic lantern firmware, you can go with the rode videomic and this hack http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=SG&v=BnEtj5l3acs&hl=en-GB
The Rode is cheaper and way better than the lenshopper in terms of off-axis isolation but it is only a mic and has no built-in recorder.
Rode's version of the lenshopper is still vaporware. (Or is it the other way round since rode announced the HD first?) So don't hold your breath! http://www.rodemic.com/vmhd

Clean dialogue is only one aspect of audio. I actually love to use the zoom H1 on my canon 5dmk2 because it captures very nice ambient sound. If you shoot something like a wedding gate crash with wide angle lens, the sound recording from it will be awesome. I also use the zoom H1 for ambient sound for all my shorts and corporate work as well.
But having said that, my partner's B cam usually has a shotgun or wireless lav on it. And during editing, I will often sync and mix in his more directed audio for the parts where is there emphasis on dialogue.
So yah, horses for courses.

Never heard of a H1n....

i have done direct audio before to canon 7d and 60d. Its a bit more set up but workable. Its a workaround i found from vimeo. Its using h4n but it will work. :)
