Hi guys, I have been using Z7P for quite sometime for some EFP with shortgun directly attached onto cam XLR port. I'm not quite satisfied with the sound quality which Z7p bundled shortgun provides. I'm currently looking in NTG3. Wanna hear from you guys if NTG3 can significantly improve the recording quality.

I understand that Z7p provides a horrible MPEG2 GOP for CF, I'm quite worried that if this compression will affect the actual performance of NTG3. You guys have any experience in this?

:D
thx guys

Would be great that you specify what kind of audio recording are you expecting.
If you need to record someone being interviewed, definitely you cannot expect to get a sound quality of a lavalier / clip mic when the shotgun is mounted on top of your camera in a noisy environment.

NTG-3 is a well reviewed mic, but if you are going to spend the money on that mic for interview applications, i'd advise that you spend the money on a wireless clip mic or even a wired one for close miking applications.

You shouldn't need to be too concerned about the audio compression in the Z7's recording...get the basics of microphone placement and miking techniques right first.
If you get an XLR extension, even the onboard included sony mic may be able to give you very decent sound for interview recordings.

Alternatively, you can opt for a dedicated sound man to take care of your audio requirements.

MKH416 is kind of the industry standard for boom work in this region....comparing the prices of both shotguns, I think the NTG-3 will be a good compromise.
How much did you pay for your NTG3 may I ask for reference?

Thanks.
