hi guys! my yashica electro 35 just arrived yesterday. i was saddened enough to find out that the light seals are too sticky and needs replacement, and the lens and viewfinder need to be cleaned.

1. i was wondering if anyone knows if its normal for the leaf shutter to be always in a closed position? (i'm not sure if the leaf shutter are the blades that you see when looking thru the lens from the front side). i have tried advancing the lever arm and then shoot but the leaf shutter only slightly jerks a bit. i was expecting it to open up or something.

2. do i need to place a new battery to have the shutter moving when i click? (no new batteries available at hand)

3. do i need to have a film inside to have the shutter moving when i click?

sorry guys/gals, its my first time holding this type of camera. i haven't tried shooting it with film yet. many thanks for taking time to answer my questions and i'll appreciate any help.

no idea... except that Lambrusco ain't for kids... ;p

1. Yes it stays closed. Without a battery, the electro 35 defaults to a 1/500 shutter speed. Maybe that's why you can only see it jerking. Its quite fast :)

2. Battery will do the metering for you and allow you access to other speeds.

3. No you don't.

The light seals are usually gone and will need replacement. The viewfinder also needs to be cleaned. You could do it yourself if you are the DIY kind or you could send it for CLA.

Hope this helped :)

mckenzy,

yep, lambrusco ain't nice for kids. cheers! :)

maddyks,

thanks a lot man! it really feels better now i know its not totally wasted. :) i might try to clean the viewfinder and replace the seals on my own, but finding a better replacement for those seals will be my next headache. :( all in all it was great help! thanks!

maddyks,

helpful links you got there. thank you very much!

And if you are DIYing, I suggest getting the batteries in (what batteries, foil etc is on matt denton's site too) before replacing light seals etc as it would be a massive bummer to go through all that only to find the electrics have kicked the bucket. the circuits don't survive s'pore weather too well.

good luck and cheers

dryonks,

good idea! for a moment there i was gearing towards cleaning and replacing all the seals. i might as well find a suitable battery first. a friend once told me i should be able to find one at ruby photo, but i haven't went there yet. and oh, i forgot to mention that the camera came with a very old battery inside the battery compartment and its stuck inside. :( i'm hoping it would not be to hard to fork it out later when i get home. but anyway, thanks for the tip! i appreciate it!

you can use the 4LR44 battery, i put some 1 cent coins to fill up the gap but any metal things will do as well, and for the battery leak in the compartment, you can clean it with white vinegar on cottonbuds :)

julescasablancas,

hey thanks! yesterday i went to a local shop and got myself a CR123 and two LR44. but right now i'm having trouble taking out the old battery from the compartment. some paper around the old battery had slightly swelled making the whole of it stuck to the compartment. i might try to pry it open or maybe drown it in alcohol or some spirit. i'm really hoping it won't be that hard to do by myself. this RF sure does give surprises. :) thanks for the info!!

Hi Lambrusco,
I am gonna receive 2 RFs that I bought 2nd hand. I think I am gonna be in the same predicament as you, given that most RFs will need their light seals replaced etc. Got a few qns for the ppl here
1) Where did you get your batteries from. I checked another thread here on CS, and they couldn't seem to find the batteries at Sim Lim anymore.
2) If my lens has fungus, where can I get it cleaned at a reasonable price. I know there is Camera Hospital, but are there any others around? And If I really need an overhaul of the camera, how much would it roughly cost?
3) A lot of these 2nd hand RFs are lacking either lens caps or leather cases. Where can I get these lens caps or leather cases to protect my cameras. If I can't get these accessories, what can I use as substitutes?

Thanks in advance.

lens caps can be bought at most shops selling photo accessories. what rfs did you get? you can get your lens cap from cathay photo. as for case, i think ur sling bag will be fine for carrying your camera around. afterall your camera is supposed to be in ur hands :) unless we are talking about cases for storage here...

Hi Elec35GS,
I got one Konica C35 Auto, and a Minolta Himatic 7S. The Konica is shipping over from the states. Got it from ebay. I just got my Himatic 7s just today. The HiMatic 7s has got fungus on the lens on the inside. Need to get it CLA'd.

for cleaning u can try cam X or the camera work shop pretty good service there. hmm the konica C35 is a pretty compact and good RF. i have one too :) oh by the way both the shops i mentioned are at the first floor of peninsula plaza. (or was it shopping centre..?) hmm whichever its the one jus behind/ next to funan.
