Description:
Hi,
I got this Tokina RMC 400mm F5.6 manual focus prime lens from a fellow ClubSnap member a few months ago to learn birding photography and practise manual focus. I'm selling this lens to fund my upgrade. Self collect at Tampines.
The below is base on my experience on this lens. If you have any questions, you can PM me and I'll try my best to answer it.
Lens Description
Tokina RMC 400mm F5.6 Manual Focus Prime Lens with built-in extendable hood.
Weight around > 1kg
Come with AF confirm adapter for Contax/Yashica Lens to EOS, ring tripod collar, Canon rear cap and front cap.
1) Tokina RMC 400mm F5.6 Manual Focus Prime Lens
2) Lens hood extended
3) Front View
4) Rear View with AF confirm adapter for Contax/Yashica Lens to EOS
Lens Condition
1) The condition of the lens is well used.
2) There are some dust and dew marks in the lens (this is why the price is so low) when I brought the lens. Didn't bother to send in for cleaning as the cleaning will cost nearly half the price of this lens. Anyway, from my result, those dust and dew marks doesn't seem to affect the image quality.
3) There is also a dent mark at the filter thread (you can see it at the above first and third pictures of the lens), so not sure whether can you mount a filter. Anyway, I didn't install any protective filter as I don't think it's necessary and practical as good filter at this size is not cheap and cheap protective filter will degrade the quality of the lens. Anyway, the hood will protect the lens itself when extended, so the lens will be fine as long as you don't drop the lens and handle with care.
Lens Performance
The lens perform very decent at F8 or smaller. I didn't use at wide open (F5.6) because the CA (Chromatic Aberrations) is quite obvious for me. The CA will reduce to mimium when the focus is right and you use F8 or smaller.... even you pixel peeping. There will be some CA if the lighting is very harsh or serious backlighting especially at the out of focus area.
Remark
The AF confirm adapter will activate the AF confirmation of your Canon DSLR, so it'll give the usual beep sound when the DSLR think it's in focus. I found that the AF confirmation is not that accurate on my Canon 450D body, so I never depend on it.
Manual focus at F8 is not as difficult as some thought... you just need some practice. Also, the view through viewfinder at F8 is not as dim as I thought.
Overall, this is a very decent lens and give very decent image quality at this price. It's good for those who want to go into birding photography or want to have the extra reach at a low cost. Please note that this is not a lens that had not been used for a long time, it's my main birding lens that I use weekly and will be my main birding lens until it's sold.
Sample images took with this lens
The sample images was capture with my Canon 450D. The images was produce with no additional sharping and processing. Below was how I process the image:
1) Convert the RAW files to 16-bit TIFF with Standard Picture Style using Canon DDP software.
2) Add my signature using photoshop and resize to 800x600 for the full image. For the 100% crop image, no resize is done... crop 800x600 directly out of the image.
3) Save as Jpeg using 80% quality setting.
1a) Large-Tailed Nightjar
1b) Large-Tailed Nightjar 100% crop
2a) Pacific Swallow
2b) Pacific Swallow 100% crop
