Equipment Model: Affordable Super-Telephoto Len - Vivitar 800m F/8 (Series 1) Catadioptic Len (For Canon EOS mount)
Price (S$): 450
Description:
A very minty condition Vivitar 800mm F/8 (Series 1) catadioptric len I am willing to let go due to very serious under-utilization, and also to provide funding for my other photographic gears. This len has always been kept in my dry box. The condition of this len and the len barrel exterior is very pristine - no scratches or even usage grease mark presence.

For specs: This is a manual focus len with a fixed aperture of F/8. The len is made up of 8 elements in 8 groupings with Super Spectra coating, the same very lens coating technology that found in a typical Canon lenses. The len barrel is constructed in Aluminium Alloy, not in plastic. The rubberized focusing ring is much thicker and due to the large len barrel diameter, is slightly presented oversized, which is good because ergonomically this will help you to hold on and focus better. And due to the buttery-smooth turning of the focusing ring you can rest assure that getting the correct focus is faster. For those of you who like myself, not used to manual focus, this can take a while to acquire the perfect right focus.

Why get this len? - Cost and portability. For this kind of price for a 800mm fixed prime supertelephoto len as compared to the professional ones, this is considered very much affordable. Also as compared to the professional superteles, the compactness size of this len is no matched (slightly bigger in mass than your DSLR with battery grip).

But what is main disadvantage (as compared to the professional superteles)? - Image Quality, of cause a professional superteles's IQ is much better. Sharpnest comparisons is debateable because a catadioptic (or mirror) len technically is also considered a prime len.

So what is this len useful for? - Personally I think this is good for someone with a limited budget who is very keen in getting into wildlife or long range subject photography. Take this len as your learning len. Buy the pro len next time. This len is also not bad, if Vivitar can endorsed it as "Series 1", the quality is good.
