A customer review:
I thought the Canon mount ring was overpriced. So I did a little searching and found many mount rings made by third parties that sell for only $10 - $15, far less than the Canon ring. So I bought one of the cheaper ones. It looked great but unfortunately it didn't do what it was supposed to do, i.e. it didn't hold the camera and lens steady on the tripod. I could lightly push on the back of the camera and the camera and lens would rock forward. So I replaced it with the Canon ring and found that it works perfectly. Even when I push the back of the camera with the lens in the ring and the camera on a tripod they don't move a bit. The reason appears to be that the Canon ring clamps shut with a spring-loaded lock that holds the ring firmly around the lens. The cheaper version doesn't have that kind of lock. Which doesn't seem like a big deal but it makes all the difference. After all, the point of buying one of these things is to hold the camera and lens perfectly steady. The Canon ring does that, the cheap imitation I bought doesn't.
