whats the bracket for?

If you are using those Arca Swiss type of ballhead, you can use this L-bracket. It allows you to place the camera in the normal horizontal or vertical position without moving the ballhead itself.

Most ballheads cannot support a heavy body in a vertical position. Using this L-plate eliminates the problem.
