Hi Guys,

Firstly, hurray finally I can take videos.
This is my first foray into the video world, I dumped my Nikon gear (or at least thinking of, they are still in my dry box), and got myself a Canon 60D for its articulated screen.
But the learning curve is hell steep. Need your help here.....

I'm using Sony Vegas 10 for editing completely, I do have Photoshop CS4, but thats about it.

Now I know the purpose of titrabytes.... the file sizes are mad. and now I know what is the purpose of QUAD Cores!

1) Normally what is your workflow for saving ? There is so many options, many of which I dont know. I only know .MOV which makes incredibly large file, and mp45,mpg,avi. Currently I save my files as mp4, matching the original video size and fps.

2) If my movie project is set at 24fps (on the video editor, when i select a new project), (my camera is default 50fps), and if I save the file as say mp4 30fps, will there be a problem ?

3) Do you normally save a high quality version as well ? In what format usually ?

THANKS!!!!!

The file output from my AVCHD camera is MP4 AVI in 30fps (default). I use Final Cut Pro cos I'm using a Mac but that doesn't matter cos it's only a tool. The movie project can be saved to 24fps if you want to have a filmic look but that's not only it.

You can save your videos in whatever frame rate you choose. It's best to retain the same frame rates if you want your videos to be as smooth as possible. If you record it at 50fps and then save your project in 24fps, the software theoretically will discard 26 frames every sec. That's more than 50% of available data. The video will appear jerky and unnatural.

As far as possible, it is best to save the video in high quality or
4:4:4 Y'CbCr colour space. This is so that you can revisit it in the future with loss of quality. For layman, that will be any format that have the least compression. A typical recommended format would be H.264 Mov or AVI or M2T or MTS.

Hope that helps.
