A film shot for the 36 hour film competition - "Fly By Night" in Singapore. The film was chosen as the top film, as well as one of the top ten judges choice.

Shot entirely on the Canon 5D Mark II in a single long take. Shoot location was in a HDB (housing) flat in Tampines, Singapore.

Sound recorded on Zoom H4N with redhead windscreen and Sennheiser G2 wireless mics.
Lens used: 35mm 1.4

G'day man,

great concept, whats the topic/theme suppose to be?

And shouldn't the VO should be a indian guy's voice? Definitely sounded like a Chinese dude.

Hi there,

The theme was "pain". There were some very interesting works. From my memory, there was one that shot an ant moving for the whole 4 mins, while another team talked about a girl who cannot turn right. On hindsight, we thought the reasons why we managed to edge out other good entries were our concept and technical execution.

In terms of concept, we feel that this story is multilayered. It threatens our traditional notion of motherly love (perhaps also the Oedipus complex), shows how easily deep love can turn mutate into deep pain and touches on the darker side of the human psyche. In terms of execution, we feel that the single long take helped to build the tension while maintaining visual attraction. And of cos, the colour grading and grainy feel helped too. With regards to the VO, it'll be good to use Munir (he's an Arab) to do it, but we felt that his voice wasn't that suitable and we thought that he had already rendered us tons of help by burying himself in the heap of ice for 20 mins.

Congrats, guys! Fantastic work.

I was also in fly-by-night n I thought that this short was the deserving winner the min it was shown!

Like Hobbes00, I am a typical down-to-earth guy too.. I love Michael Bay! But it's impossible not to love the way u developed the details of this short in just 2 min, and in such a beautiful way!

Looking forward to your next short.. are u guys joining the emerging filmmakers competition?

panofan: Do you have your video online?

I bet I must have missed out a lot! I was busy Halloweening around the streets ;X

Hi Panofan,

Thanks, hope you liked the short as much as we (except maybe Munir) enjoyed shooting! =) Btw, which entry was yours?

We should be joining it, but we're contemplating if we should send in "Mummy" or another short that is in production now..

What's the URL?

again from the thoughts of the Judges - multilayered and provokes deeper thoughts or meanings.

But I don't like it, are the other videos/films worst off or something? - Am I the only one feeling the same way?

Don't get me wrong - The only reason I don't like this is becos its just pure artsy; and i got a thing with artsy stuff.
I'm a typical down-to-earth guy who loves cars, top gear, Michael bay and Star Wars. :D

Hello, this is not some art house multi-layered film that you need to lost sleep interpreting it. It's just a simple narrative film, shot on a 5DMK2, in one long take and it happen that the judges like it and it's the winner. Why must you think that it won because other videos/films is worst off. And what's wrong with arthouse film anyway?

I congrats the winner, but I won't jump up and down:rbounce::rbounce:praising it.
All films made, long or short, good or bad, is already a winner.

Congrats again!

G'day sibeiblur,

This is an art film - It definitely isn't commercial.
I'm just asking how were the other films and if they were as art-house as theirs.

You don't have to slam me down and be all defensive with art-house films, I'm just asking... "Why do you think the judges picked it."

Chill mate.
David

Congrats on the win guys~ Long single shots sure ain't easy to take.

I didn't like it though, disagree with the concept actually.

What's the point of the slow long single shot through the entire bathroom? Doesn't seem to have a motivation for such a camera movement, in my opinion.

Maybe you folks could have added elements that hinted (in a creepy progressively intensifying manner) on the reveal or the mother child relationship instead of showing the audience random tiles and bathroom accessories. These elements could tie in/resonate with your VO to make it a much stronger audio/visual journey instead of a nice slow long shot.

Maybe didn't have time coz it's fly by night after all.

Apologies for the arm-chair critique.

Why did u call it "arm-chair critique" ?

Hello, this is not some art house multi-layered film that you need to lost sleep interpreting it. It's just a simple narrative film,

Cinema is all about story-telling, whether art house or not. There's no notion that art house films must not be narrative. In fact, they are different ways of story-telling rather than conventional goal-pursuing narratives. The whole idea of art house is to challenge mainstream, to engage in another way of story-telling. Some misjudge on art house films due to a thorough understanding of story-telling techniques and think that art house is completely incomprehensible and pointless. They can't be blamed either. Understanding art house films needs some knowledge or close study of cinema and it often doesn't please general audience.

Personally, I don't enjoy gloomy art house films though. Being gloomy isn't all that art house can do. They can be happy as well as savvy. That's what I believe. But it all depends on personal choices of the director. So I have no say in others' films for being gloomy. haha..

i thought there was a story to the film, the 3 act structure though not apparent was still present, there was a begining middle and end (which came in the form of a twist).

If anything i thought it was an excellent trailer for a feature or short. And it deffinately intrigued us and made us think, which after 36 hours of filmmaking, was "pain"ful.

and yes the execution with the 5DmkII was brilliant. someone must have very steadyhands
