Hi,
For the new year 2007, here is another reason why you should make a resolution to get the G-lens..

I did a comparison btw. 28-70mm f2.8 G with 28 f2.0 prime..
look at the sharpness, color and bokeh..

Poison alert.

might want to check for backfocus on the sharpness test with 28mm f2.0... there seems to be some backfocus
the left arm is more in focus than the head...etc

and imho the bokeh seems better on the prime.. the bokeh of the 28-70 are more "moon-like" where as the prime give a more circular bokeh.

On close inspection, it appears that your 28 f2 is back focusing a bit at f2.8. You will noticed on the bottom two pictures, the figurine on the back is much more in focus for the f2. The table wood grain also shows the different focusing plain. :dunno:

May be you could double check?

Yeap.. I suspected some slight focus differences btw the 2 lens.. as the G is longer that than the prime..
and the G min focus distance is longer.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the G lens performance.. and thus trying to poison others to jump into the G-wagon as well

careful of the G poison....it very damaging:devil:

U r damm evil

erm.................... let's wait till more G are produced. Minolta's Gs definitely less than Canon's L.

First day of New Year, already a lot of poisoning going on...

Don’t play play ah, they don’t put a G there for no purpose…:bsmilie:

ever since i used a G lens...i have been searching for one on ebay since then :embrass:

ur evil man... :sticktong

hehe but i think maybe should redo the test lah. the 28 f2 is supposedly a damn good lens. these results seem unbelievably bad. the 28-70G is not the sharpest in the G line-up. of all the G lenses it's the one that most ppl are willing to forgo and use the consumer version (28-75) instead. so i suspect maybe the 28 f2 focus is off.

I think you need to repeat the test with consistent subject to sensor distance. 28mm f2.0 should be sharper than 28-70 f2.8 G at f2.8, at least my test some time ago confirm that, can't find the test photos anymore.

G lenses are great, but still slightly softer compare to prime for 28mm f2.0, 35mm f1.4, 35mm f2.0, 85mm f1.4 caliber.

yes, i agree;)

:embrass: OK, I think I need to do another test btw these 2 lens..

Hee Hee ... new test... with fixed tripod and object + no filter attach to lens.
I'm still impress with the G-lens performance.
Is there anymore back focus problem on the 28mm f2.0?

at f2.8

28-75mm f2.8 is a sharp lens and very usable at f2.8

my eyes ain't very good in telling difference, but what i can see here is that the left side of the 28mm prime ain't as sharp as the tamron and the G, but the right side is sharper than the tamron and comparable to the G. (provided all are perfectly focused)
as for center, i seriously can't tell any different between all the 3 lenses by looking at the small image(in term of sharpness).

good test here

Why G-lens....heem let see...

Hi pals..

Here aresome of my thought having owned sevral G-lens before.
The build of the G-lens are basically
- build like a tank with better build for more rugged use. Though not 100%water proof. Its design can help prevent failure to main mechanism when exposed to dust or sand. - to a certain extent.
- sharp wide open with enough DOF for subject versus
back ground separation.
- Some of the fast f2.8's may get a litttle massive but its sharp ness is whooh out of this world even with TC's (APO Matched TC's of course)

BUT!!!!!

Due to the 1.5x Crop.....the performance of these lens is a little shortchanged.
The once really great Bokeh may now be a little less due to the need to move back to achieve the same FOV as per the 35mm FOV.

I personally used these (personal thoughts)
- 80-200(Black) F2.8 - (Superb sharp But Heavy)
- 400mm APO f4.5 G - (Superb Sharp - but a little too bulky for general use -like travelling...)
- 200 Macro F4 G (still using - Its a little to the heavy side - but Focus resolution is Greeeeat!! Esay to focus manually)
- 200mm APO f2.8 G (Still using - This is a cult "must own" lens if you can get hold of one - light +super sharp+ small!!!!!)

When used with the 35mm film, the AF tends to lock much better due to background /subject separation. So i just hope that a FF body would come by....soon

Lots of time due to the incrased subject distance the focus accuracy also result in misfocus...
