Which software to use for reduce pic size?

I've try to reduce photo size to 800x600 in order to show them on these forum. The file size reduced by using IrfanView, however the quality drop alot.
Anyone can pls advise of a "free" and "good" software to use?

IrFanview should do it pretty well. Set the "Use Resample Function" in the "Advanced Options". This will give a better quality picture. Ensure "Preserve Aspect Ratio" is on too.

800x600 is a little too big for posting, try 600x400, or a maximum size of 700 pixels wide for horizontal shots, 700 pixels tall for vertical shots.

Yup I agree. Irfanview is the way to go.

There's also a jpeg compression setting when you are saving the file
