which HD vid cam allows straight editing using Premiere w/o the need of conversion?

heard tat those AVCHD format needs to convert before you can start editing, is that true? if so, when shooting Full HD format, will converting make it looks like 720p or even SD quality & convert to which format? am currently using premiere pro for editing... which editing software allows straight editing of HD videoclips w/o converting?

planning to get a HD video cam for wedding purpose, budget around $3-4K the most but am looking at Panasonic HMC40 & 41 but it looks quite small (like bigger than compact camcorder but smaller than prosumer cam).

heard tat mostly ppl uses either Sony or Panasonic for videoshoot, is JVC gd enough as it's abt $3600+ & it offers 2x 16gb SDHC, looks quite a gd deal.

Otherwise, I think most Samsung and Sanyo MP4 camcorders and Canon HDLSRs are supported. Ditto HM100. Another option is the Panasonic's SDX-1 which gives AVCHD, MP4 and the new iFrame.

sorry, wat do u mean by iFrame? Ditto HM100 = JVC GY-HM100? JVC shoots at only 2 formats, which is mov or mp4. premiere cs4 or below can just edit straight w/o converting? watched from youtube tat mov format dun need to convert if u using FCP. there's a wins ver of FCP, rite? or do i have to reali get a mac instead?
 

iFrame (intraFrame) is the new Apple's new HD codec that is essentially motion jpeg but only 960x540. It is supported natively by iMovie and requires no transcoding. HM100 shoots in XDCAM EX-a long-GOP Mpeg2 in a mov wrapper; or standard MP4. CS5 supports MP4 natively. CS4 I don't think. FCP7 supports JVC/Sony's XDCAM EX natively but performance takes a big hit when you add layers, filters etc. Effectively, on FCP, there is no running away from transcoding to ProRes to preserve your sanity. Luckily, with FCP7 transcoding to ProRes takes much shorter time than realtime. There is no windows version of FCP. My advice is go with the camera you are comfortable with and use the supporting NLE be it Vegas, FCP. I can foresee that AVCHD will be winner in the consumer codec space so Edius, Cyberlink could be better for you. If you like macs then get a new thunderbolt mac(book pro) and FCP and transcode everything to Prores 422. With a thunderbolt harddrive, you can start shooting 1080p and editing cheaply without RAID. All this hinges on the expectation that FCP8 rocks and Apple continues with its pro apps development path. If not, you are better off with windoze
 

Does the Panasonic AG-HMC41EU uses card or tapes for storage?
 

I was able to edit AVCHD natively in Premiere Pro CS4 using a 4 year old laptop with a 4 year old duo Core 2.4 Ghz processor. Alas, it just crashed recently.

Only thing is you get a lot of red lines and can't playback realtime unless you render first.

If you ask me, I think that's the best thing about Premiere Pro. You are able to drag almost anything into the timeline and start editing.

But of cos, there are reasons why FCP and Avid exist.
