Hi

I noticed my Yashica's GX viewfinder is pretty dim and the light seal needs replacement. Also thiking of doing a CLA just to see if all is ok. Are there a place that i can do all this and what's the cost?

Like both De Camera Consultant and P&G. Friendly and great service.

De Camera Consultant is great! :)

Any idea what's the cost like assuming no pad of death?

I suggest that you bring your camera down to him, but I am sure he charges reasonably. :)

Ok thanks guys. WIll consider the experts listed above. :-)

De Camera is the best 3rd party CLA'er I've been to so far ... I would rate him on par with DAG or Harry Fleenor in the USA, both of who I used before.

Like I got a 50mm chrome Summilux from someone here, good ok condition, best one I've seen so far. I knew it had lots of oil in the blades though, as the aperture ring got stiff and stuck at wide open settings. Shake it a bit, some dirt on the elements. Stiff focus ring ...

Paid De Camera for a thorough cleaning, he disassembled and washed (not just wipe) each piece, got a whole bottle of rust from the aperture blades. Anyway, in short, this is a 1960s Summilux that now works like new and looks almost new. Purrrfect. Reasonably priced work, compared to the US guys. It may be considered expensive to some here, but there are cheaper others, below.

P&G, Cam-X, Camera Hospital, Ron's ... all nice fellows, but I didn't get enough satisfaction from their work like I get from the famous USA guys. De Camera's work did.

I agree with Clubgrit, in fact we met one another when we went to collect our gear today.

De camera consultant may be the more expensive than the "usual suspects" in the bermuda triangle (think peninsula plaza, shopping center and adelphi), but so far has one of the best in terms of workmanship i've ever encountered so far. In fact, he really strips everything to bare bones to wash and polish off every single, screw, knob, washer, what have you till they shine before doing the usual CLA and assembling afterwards. And he goes the extra mile to ensure that he solves the problem area at the root instead of some temporary solution. Sure, I've heard comments that he is slow, etc etc, but such things take time and you can't just expect the repair to be done overnight. I just sent in my M2 for a CLA and turnaround was 5 days, shiny, spick and span and works so smoothly now.

When I send in my cameras to him, i'm not just sending it in for a CLA, but a new lease of life. After experiencing many of the so called "professional repairman" locally who tend to charge cheaply but take short cuts, there's no way i'm gonna subject my gear to such abuse. Like the old adage says: you get what you pay for.

I would definitely recommended Mr Tay 100%.

I agree with the recommendations for Mr Tay of De Camera Consultant. He has a passion for what he does and it shows. My M6 had the Leica wording scratched off by the previous owner and he helped me to repaint the words (after checking with me) with his own enamel paint even though I only sent the camera in for cleaning of the viewfinder. The result looks indistinguishable from the original :) He's also very ethical and will not overcharge you or recommend a repair you don't need.

Maybe i should post an update of the GX that i have mentioned in the 1st post.

I sent my GX to Phillip Tay as most people here recommended and i am leaning towards him because his place is walking distance from my workplace.

Like what everybody said he is very knowledgeable about cameras and he even help me cut a small piece of metal to place in the batteries compartment so i can used modern batteries without resorting to stuff aluminium foil to fill the space. All this without even me asking for it!

He also scrapped the disintegrated light seal out and repainted the parts thats turned grey due to the adhesive used by factory.

I will be sending my GX's twin brother to him for a CLA soon..... :D

Hahaha. Glad I found this thread. I live in the building right next to Mr. Tay's shop. How convenient!
