if the lens is not effecting the image, forget it.

cleaning a lens may result in worst problems.

If it's dust. Ignore it, it won't show on the pictures.

If it's fungus, then go and clean it.

You clean the dust, after few usage, the dust will come again.

Arto.

dust issues are common. Open up the aperture blades and look thru the lens, if the dust issue appear black spots, then it may be necessary to send for cleaning.

One simple test is to look thru the lens by placing it on the light panel with aperture wide open. :)

Sorry.. dumb question... how do you open the aperture blades?

If your lens is a G lens which doesn't come with an aperture ring, there is this little lever at the rear of the lens near the mounting bayonet which the camera actually uses to open up and control the aperture. Just push it upwards (IIRC) and the aperture will open up. Otherwise just use the aperture ring to open up the aperture.

And if your lens is a D-series lens, just turn the aperture ring to the widest possible f/stop number.
