Hi Guys and Gals,

Need some advise on where are the best places locally to send your Leica Lenses for CLA. prefer to get this done locally if such a service is reliable and available locally.

RF lenses if that makes a difference.

thanks

Well, there are a few places that I've tried, and I find them to be pretty decent. Prices wise I am not too sure, as I serviced my rangefinders camera bodies, and not specifically lenses.
1) P&G cameras. There are 2 branches, owned by different brothers. Andrew owns the one in Peninsular shopping centre. David owns the one in Adelphi, at the basement floor.
David charges a bit more than others. But then he and Andrew were recommended to me by Samuel in John 3:16, so I guess they are good.
2) CamX@Peninsula shopping ctr 1st floor. Nick owns the shop and charges quite good rates for servicing.
3) The Camera Workshop@Peninsula shopping ctr 1st floor as well. They won't give you a quote over the phone. You will have to bring down the lenses to let them take a look first.
4) The Camera Hospital. The owner is Steven. He services rangefinder bodies for a good price. However, I think he tends to charge more for Leica stuff.
I've serviced my rangefinders with all these ppl above before, except for The camera workshop. They provide pretty good service and you can trust them to do a good job.
Do call them to get a quotation on the price first, if you want to know which is the cheapest one.

I send mine to De Camera Consultant @ Grandlink Square. Very well done, totally dismantle and re-grease. Will last me for another 10 years.
Regards,

Why not send to Leica itself? Also, I think there is a difference between an overhaul and a CLA.

I've tried a few non Leica lenses for Cam.X, and so far, I'm quite happy. I'm only confused as if I state I want the aperture blades of a lens aligned + CLA, I see only the aperture blades corrected, but not really sure about the lens being CLA. If I state clearly I want a CLA, the lenses come back very clean and crystal clear.

Now, I just send everything overseas.

Happen to me too.. Very clean but focus still off..
So far happy with CamX for the service and good prices.

NO, none of the abovementioned is able to overhaul/CLA up to Leica factory's spec (like DAG or Golden Touch.), IMHO (I had tried them all). Cheaper, but definitely NOT as good.

Sending oversea is costly and a PITA but no choice, if you want your Leica stuff properly done.

YMMV.

if possible i also want to sent cla overeas...
but i just can't afford it..
the shipping cost + cla cost from the leica germany, cost me nearly half of my leica body price itself :(

Half of your Leica body?:bigeyes: Are you using one of the older Leicas (M3,M2,M4,III)?

I spent some time with Gerry Smith of Kindermann back in Jul of 2008 while visiting my parents in Toronto. He's an ex-Leica engineer, and he gave me a tour of his workshop which was decked out with original Leica factory repair and testing equipment. He is probably one of the few guys outside of Leica's factory that can get your camera back to it's original specs. He's pretty famous in Canada for Leica repairs.

I don't suggest you use any local guys that claim they know what they are doing, and I can tell you from experience that they know jack **** and cannot be trusted.

I paid CDN$450 to have the M6 back to factory specs, and when I got it back the difference was astonishing! The camera just felt really smooth and "newish". Your Leica deserves that. If you're not sending it back to Leica, then go with the big 3, DAG, Sherry or Gerry, you'll sleep better :)

Cannot agree more.

other than these 3, Peter Grisaffi/CRR, UK and Ye Youxin/USA are also highly respectable Leica repairmen.

Thanks a lot for your recommendations, I'll try the few local suggestions. I prefer not to subject a delicate instrument to the handling by the postal services.

I'll probably try out CamX.

BTW where is John 3:16 there weren't in the usual corner in Funan the last time I looked

cheers

they moved up to the 5th floor (north bridge road side) quite some time ago.

Well, for your Leica stuff, I would recommend to send back to the factory for servicing or else you really need to find a trustworthy service guy to do you job.

For those local shop recommended by 'wrting with light', they are pretty famous in S'pore. But my personal experience with some of them (not all) is very bad and therefore I won't recommend anyone of you to go there. Basically, I don't think the workmanship is comparable to a true expert, if really demand workmanship. Your camera may look the same from outside before and after CLA, but who knows the inside??

Anyway, some time you might want to save some money over the shipping cost or other service cost (just like me before), but it will end up that you send to the wrong person and finally you choose to destroy your own camera. Think twice........

Pai seh, I didn't know that some of them were that lousy. :embrass: I guess for Leica lens, then better send to the ones overseas.

Ok CLA on hold .....

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

glad many are speaking up... from my eperience with all of the repair guys in Singapore , bare in mind that the moment u mention the word "Leica" the charges must go up 20 to 50percent more than normal . In fact their charges when u do the exchange rates are almost the same as DAG but their skills are nowhere near them.
I am not looking down on our fellow Singaporeans but their standard is really not on par.

So far the only shop that charges reasonable is CAMx regardless Leica or non Leica.

From what I observe in ebay, equipment done by DAG or Shelly all fetch good price in used market .. That tells how good and reputable their standard in the RF world.

Hiya! Pls pardon the ignorance, i am new to RFs...

Who is DAG and Shelly? And how do I send my camera/lens to them? Roughly how much does overhaul and CLA cost?

Thanks in advance!
