I'm intending to buy a 2nd hand Canon DSLR body. What do I look for in the DSLR to know that it's not spoiled and such?

bring your own memory card and lens. Make sure it can take pictures...

Bring laptop to check sc!
Check all buttons ESP the dial and wheels!! Turn continuously in both directions to ensure its smooth..

Not all Canon cameras you can check shutter count with laptop.

check the ports too.....sometimes there are owners who are careless that they spoil the ports.

Of course we know some canon cameras cannot use laptop to check sc, THEN suggest to us any better method! Contribute constructive ideas or comments rather than saying this one cannot that one cannot... Give ideas instead of stupix comments

there are many things that you can't tell until you spend time to test it out.
if you are new to photography, just buy brand new camera, the potential risk is not justifiable by the saving.
you may buy a lemon, and the total cost of repairing and used camera may even more than getting a new camera.

bring it to Canon Service Center is the best way, but no buyers and sellers will want to incur additional cost just to know the shutter counts.

agree, some defects don't occur instantly...better buy a new set...

What I said is the truth. If you think truth is stupidx.. then so be it.

Personally, I think it is better than comments that suggest things that does not work... like asking people to bring laptop to check shutter counts for canon cameras.

Another silly comment. Self-contradicting. First of all say laptop to check sc does not work for all models of canon, now say does not work at all. No comments. Give constructive comments such as what happen when sc cannot be checked via laptop? What should the buyer do? Is there any other methods to check sc on the spot? Pls contribute instead of giving stupidx remarks.

'Bring laptop to check sc.' - information

'Some canon cams can't be checked that way.' - information

'You are an a55 for saying it as you don't spoonfeed me more information on what to do. ' - being an a55 (can be considered trolling).

Be nice,

I only say once.

To chk shutter there are 2 ways for canon camera:

1. Astrojargon.net / eosinfo / 40d shutter
- can download to ur laptop
- can be use for many cam except e newer one e.g 450d,500d,40d,50d,5dmk2

2. Eoscount.com
- almost all canon cam
- work off from windows machine and internet explorer only
- cannot download
- if outside then have to do teethering with ur phone or make sure u have internet access

Nikon:
- use software to chk e picture on e meta information of e e file
- not sure what software

Other things to chk
- body condition, make sure in good cond. if possible not dropped / chipped
- view finder, make sure its clean. Open e mount and view it to e sky / lights... Cleaning a screen cost $20-30 @ canon
- sensor if dusty can be clean... $20/30 again
- better to have a full set with box n manuals, easier to sell
- test all buttons, make sure its working n not stuck
- test e wheel, make sure its not running.. Stop when u stop
- what else ya :)

Thanks for the Canon info. :-)
For nikon exif, you can use opanda or other exif readers to get sc.
UFraw refuses to work for me under windows 7 and quite a few ppl have same problem. Anyone know a fix?

Why don't you contribute instead?
Looking at your attitude, I don't feel like saying anything here anymore. You are so hero, you do it. Come.

If EXIF for Nikon cameras is all you need, Opanda is so far the best solution.

As for UFraw, are you using 32 bit or 64 bit windows? Seems like most of the problem is folks trying to install UFraw to match 32 bit GIMP, while on 64 bit OS.

Yup 64 bit windows 7 with (i guess) 32 bit gimp. I guess I'll have to wait for gimp to go 64 bit. Thanks. :)

I did use Opanda, but just threw the information on UFraw out for people with gimp.
