Whats the deal with Domke bags?

I really love the non-camera-cheapo bag look but I had been puzzled by their popularity and high prices, don't our wet weather makes them quite an unfavorable choice?

Its not just that it is not water resistant, but also it probably also holds more moisture and drys much slower after getting wet, both favorable condition to promote fungus.

Again I love the look that its a better low key low attention bag than any of the popular Stealth Reporters or Urban Disguises out there.

Thanx for any enlightening posts.

I own a Domke F2 now and previously a F3x Please clarify the statement/word used in your PM:

1. non-camera-cheapo bag look => are u saying domke bag design looks cheapo?
2. not water resistant => why u claim it is not water resistant? did u experience water seep into the domke bag during raining days? btw, water resistant and water proof are different
3. holds more moisture and drys much slower after getting wet, both favorable condition to promote fungus => usually when water come into contact with the surface of bag, it does not penetrate or perhaps takes long time to penetrate into the material provided the rain is really big. In fact if the bag really gets wet, just put it near the fan to dry it.

Domke bag is nice. I own one before, just sold it away last month because I have 5 camera bags

Bags are design for difference purpose, depend on what you looking for.
Btw, good thing never come in cheap price :D

Wow dont be so serious, just curious about the bags. :)

thats what happens when you say people buy cheapo bag.. lol

ok la, kidding..

hmm i think they're pretty good bags..

but with something like tat, its really up to individual taste and preferences...

I am using Domke F6 version and I must agree that they look cheapo though they are indeed not cheap when it comes to their prices. However, it is precisely this cheapo look, old-school style that I want to get it and am loving it.
It is durable, low profile and water-resistance (just to correct you). The textile used is soft and contour to the shape of your body (or hip).

I am referring to the look of the bag, not the users. I actually like it that it look cheapo and non-camera. I had many times would not know the guy is carrying cameras except for the red Domke words that gives it away.

I see, thanx for the clarification. So the canvass is pretty much water resistant like the Nylon used by other brands?

i agree, better to spned the money on something weather proof like billingham hadley pro

I have a few camera bags and the Domke J3 is my favourite:
a) Unobtrusive and non-squarish, so doesn't attract unnecessary attention.
b) The ballistic nylon material is very tough.
c) The top flap (secured by a metal clip) makes for easy access.

Rgds.

or weather proof camera

You can buy the wax version, I think it's more waterproof than the ordinary canvas.

I own a F-3x myself and i can say that its one of the best cam bags around.

Does the wax rub off on your clothes ?
I wonder cause the dark brown colour, i guess the wax would be the same colour ?

I have a few Domkes in both canvas & ballastic nylon. I think canvas will eventually absorb water after ageing and might need reproofing (using 3M waterproofing spray) but you can opt for the ballistic nylon version which is showerproof. Personally, I found their wax version a bit 'greasy' to touch.

I also use a waterproofing spray (tend to use them on my shoes) but I have absolutely no idea if they're all that effective
Rarely caught in the rain with my bag.
I wrap it up in a large plastic bag when it's pouring ;p
The side labels with the word Domke can be removed, I've seen some with them gone and one guy blackened them with a black marker (!)
I like my F-3X but the mid compartments are really old school and don't really fit with the large diameter of new lenses
The wifey got me a new custom made bag from Etsy, not too shabby. It's nice because the insides feel like ... a big soft quilt cover. Definitely cannot get wet!

i  billinghams :bsmilie:

haha u havent seen my nike slingbag;p

i got it at 70% off, so only paid 40 bucks for first hand. large enough space, perhaps the only downside is the lack of dividers. the material on the outside is rugged, the material inside is like... rubber.

and mine is waterproof:D if folded in the right way, i can throw the bag to swim:)

nike bag too sporty for me.

i can use my billingham bag as a normal casual office bag in office attire without looking weird (i always find wearing office wear and sporty bags looks weird).
