Hi guys,
Is it advisable to use 3rd party brand photo paper to print? Saw a Taiwan brand photo 4R paper selling less then $9.00 for 50 pieces at Sim Lim.

Depend on your expectation of the photo quality. I use Inkjet paper, S$ 5.- for 100 pcs for sharing A4 photo prints with family (using cheap inks), put them in popular A4 clear file, and they are very happy. So it is for fun, not for quality. But the picture quality is reasonable for viewing purpose, not for art of pixel peeping.

My favorite for third party paper is Ilford. Very good quality, easy color matching with screen. I often print using Ilford 'smooth multi-use' paper, and very happy with the result. Color also very lasting.

They do not have a fix price but was told not more than S$1500.00. Will update once I get my printer soon.:)

I got a canon ip4200 to replace my old, heavily overused and now dead i550. Got it mainly as an office printer for documents. I am blown away by the photo print quality on semi-gloss and glossy paper. They match good lab prints in every way, and this is not even considered a photo printer. After getting to use this fellow, I stopped going to the lab. Guess the pigment ink really makes a difference, the photo prints look far superior to anything I could coax out of the ancient i550. I wonder how those 6-8 colour printers perform.

i do agree that printing with original inks and papers has a definate difference in quality, but i calculated on a R230 with 6inks, it cost me about $1 for a 4R print, and that i havent include paper costs. so i might as well stick me cash to the photo labs for now....
but i currently use CIS with EPSON papers, as the ink tend to last longer and longer slightly better on EPSON papers.... dunno why... haha, feels better too!

just interested, is there any printer out there using original inks and paper that can print 4R @ a cost close to 40cents? and is there any significant difference printing DIY using originals and going to the lab?

dye sub has the lowest cost per print (slightly below 30 cents). From personal experiences, lab prints have slightly better colours, but nothing beats the joy of seeing your photos instantly:thumbsup:

I had this same experience. I now have a small ream of unusable Sepom Alumina 4R Matte.
For long-term display, I'll just go original.
