I join in the quest for Prime lens.... in my case, use mainly for shooting my BB boy... coming 2 years old... with my D200 and the 50mmf/1.8 currently.... have the AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G (believe this is the kit lens for D40...)

As mostly taking his pic at home, sometime found that 50mm might be too long..... was looking at Nikon 35mmf/2.... or should I go lower... 28mm,24mm...20mm???

Sometime to get candid shots.... the shorter prime might not be suitable, so also looking for a longer prime.... 85mm okie??? or for future use outdoor, should go for longer like 180mm???
:dunno::lovegrin:

i would pretty much swear by the 35f2-50f1.4-85f1.4 combo. of course, the f1.8 of the versions of the latter 2 are also pretty good subs for those on a tighter budget.

but as you had pointed out, the 35 still be a little long, esp in our small hdb rooms. but to me, the selling point of the 35f2 is the quality wide open, with an additional stop over the 28f2.8 and 24f2.8. the 85f1.4 is an excellent mid-tele, without too much fear of handshake of longer focal lengths... esp while trying to catch your breath chasing after your kid. :bsmilie:

Thank... will take those into consideration..... gettng old..... sometime got to quiet quiet snap his photo..... cannot let him find out.... else will not be able to hold the camera still after chasing him round the house..... :sweat:.........

But just to check, any 3rd part equivalent (in terms of IQ) to the 85mm f/1.4??? like many others, tight on budget... or it is the best in the range and die die must get or not at all kind of lens??? :sweat:

that's one consideration also.... :lovegrin:

Go for this one great lens & also value for money.
Enjoy every moment & capture touching image is priceless.
happy shooting..cheers:D

Hmmm... How about the ZF 85/1.4?

So how much this "poisonuous" ZF 85/1.4 cost?? :sweat:
More than the AF-D Nikkor 85/1.4. So much 3rd party lens for you. ;p

I read from our forum here that the ZF cost about $1500. But then this is a manual lens....

If u dont mind manual focusing, u can try the cheaper Voigtlander 58mm f1.4, $580....

As your child grow older, you could play around with some fun Fisheye lenses too!

I've had used the Sigma 15mm diagonal FE, as well as the Nikon 10.5mm FE. The Sigma behaves like an ultra-wide with very close focusing distance, and the Nikon gives wacky effects. Both are F/2.8 so pretty usable indoors without flash.

How about the good old 105mm F2 DC. You can have additional fun playing with the DC control while taking pics of your boy.
