Wedding Video Music Copyright Conference

Dear all, I am assisting RIPS+COMPASS to organise a conference to understand the music copyright law policy. This is essential for all that produce wedding videos or photo montages, professionals, freelancers and hobbist included.

The tentative date is 22th March 2010 Monday. Location to be decided and notified by email.
Thank you.

Kindly email enquiry@firewerkzfilms.com

Thanks for the interest, RIPS+COMPASS is confirming the date and venue. For those of you who do not have any idea of what this is about, have a look at the background below.

Background:
There was a series of enforcement work in the wedding industry from early 2009.

Those found to have infringed the copyright law (eg: using music for photo montage, video highlights, etc on actual day weddings at hotel or showcase sample work on internet) were prosecuted. Wallets were hurt and many people (pros+freelancers) were caught off guard.

There was no solution and only prosecution so many went underground. Finally in early 2010, RIPS (yes they are the enforcement body) issued the solution. An annual licence that allows videographers /photographers to legally use copyrighted music for wedding applications. You have to contact RIPS to obtain this application form.

Problem
However there are many freelancers in the market that are not reachable by RIPS so I have volunteered to assist them to reach out to everyone. I hope that everyone exposed would attend this conference to safeguard your interest.. especially the small timers who are working for passion.

The road ahead
There will be stricter enforcements ahead so venture at your own risk if you choose to walk on the dark side. I can assure you many eyes are watching.

Regards,
Sean Seah

Thanks...

btw, your first post did not mention the time.... but it's ok. clear now. c u!

No prob Ronny. The response is pretty good so far. I really hope by having more people, we will shoot more questions to RIPS/COMPASS because there are a lot of gray areas in my opinion. This is a good forum for them to understand our needs and consider fine tuning the policy in the future.

Dear all, the conference date has been confirmed to be 29th March 2010 Monday, 7.30pm.
They are still in the process of sourcing for the location.

Please take note your names and contacts would NOT be released to RIPS/COMPASS/Music Publishers. I am only compiling the numbers to source the right venue.

There will be a presentation to explain the policies followed by Q&A. Venue details would be released once confirmed.

Thank you.

Hey Engr,

Thanks for taking the effort to organize this conference. A lot of photographers and videographers are frustrated with the lack of clear guidelines on what is permissible when it comes to the use of music, and I'm sure this conference will go a long way in clearing the air.

Kudos to you!

Thanks Neo. I'm one of the frustrated people like u.. I guess I was harassing them with so many questions till they decided to agree to my request to trash it out. Unity is power. If we have many people shooting questions it will help them and us to figure out the best way hopefully.

Reps from all the copyright bodies would be there so it is really the best time to ask questions.. they are not taking attendance so please shoot all you can cuz after that... its going to be war on the pirates.

Hi engr,

I'm confirmed attending this event.

I feel that maybe we should let the mediacorp news know about this event and let them publicize it.

Alternatively, those of us whose companies have a website or some other kinds of publication means should let our customers and clients alike know about this event. I feel it will be good too if those getting married, be it those who have found a company to cover their wedding day or not, can attend this conference. Their perspectives may be different from ours and thus they may have concerns which we may miss out for RIPS.

Or is this event solely for us (media people) and RIPS only?

What do you think? :)

Hi feelthefeel,
I initiated the event to allow us content creators a forum to voice our problems in a closed door environment. Having the media around would make the session bureaucratic in my opinion.. which is not to our favour. We want the session to be without any prejudice and very fair. They explain their stand, we explain our stand and hopefully meet in the middle.

Anyway the policy is already out and they have indicated they are ready to listen. I seek everyone's cooperation to make this a very friendly and frank discussion for the improvement of the industry. We are not stopping wedding couples to attend but bear in mind the focus would be on content creators.

Thanks!

I am not into wedding videos. But I am curious about the cost of that annual license. Any idea? Does that apply for videos played during corporate events?

Hi Tengo, your question has to be directed to RIPS directly. The conference is only related to the new policy on weddings.
