Voigtlander R4M

Dear mate,


I am not new to photography and film photography, but i maybe new to RF models.

Recently i have heart of moving into RF family, one of the model that caught my attention is Voigtlander R4M, claimed to be able to support most wide angle lens with other advance features. One consideration on R4m is future upgrade to most ultra wide angle range lens, which appear to be very promising and useful in day to day usage.

My main use is on 24mm - 35mm range, street shoot and some environmental portraiture and story telling style shooting. Does any one of you own this "poisoning weapon", can you please share the review/opinion of it?

Perhaps some contribution of how capable this tool can perform would be very much appreciated. Constructive and objective review maybe welcome.( advantage like its usefulness, daily use, operation, second hand value, investment on lens, maintainence, durablility etc)

Hmm, havent seen much R4M reviews around but we've got a R2A review done by Pikapig aka Jackson on the RFSG web.

Er pretty much the same camera imho except VF is catered for wider lenses.

If you have experience with the Nikon FM2, F3 series (I conclude you shoot Nikon through your signature), the Bessa's basically function the same way.
All elements are easily accessible, the body is firm and viewfinder, amazing. The metering of the Bessa's is a notch above the Nikon's, with its bright LED's leading the way.

You will not go wrong with a Bessa.

I have a R4M myself and am really pleased with the camera. Light meter works accurately. Viewfinder is bright and framelines are easily seen, even for someone with spectacles like me. I only have problem with the 21mm frameline as it is really towards the edge of the viewfinder. So a spectacle-wearing person will bump his spectacle lens into the viewfinder. Other than that, I have no complaint about my first rangefinder camera.

As I am more of a wide angle person, the R4M has the 21mm, 25mm, 28mm, 35mm and 50mm frameline which suits me. I currently have a Color Skopar 21mm F4 which is a gem in my own opinion. Very sharp (maybe not Leica-sharp since I don't own a Leica) and compact. I also have a 35mm lens. Some may complain that the 35mm frameline is a bit small, but it works fine for me.

Let me know if you are keen to try it out. I can bring it out and let you have a feel of it. Alternatively, Chiff is the next place you want to visit.
