using a basic camcorder vs a point and shoot

anyone can explain to me the difference between shooting a video using a point & shoot like an ixus vs shooting with a basic camcorder like a standard definition canon legria fs 306?

i've heard that the quality of the video from the camcorder would be tonnes better, but then... why is it that a video of the same length is so much bigger in size if it was taken by the ixus?

thanks!!!

Depends on how old your ixus is. Motion Jpeg compression used in early point and shoot can be only 640x480 at low bitrate, their CCD imager is also smaller than today's MPEG2 camcorders. But latest ixus now does H.264 MPEG4 720p video on a bigger sensor. Beyond the form factor, the more important factors are resolution, codec, bitrate, sensor type/size. You might be surprised by some point and shoot yet.

hmmm..... so the difference is just the compression issue? i'm just asking a general question. coz i've used point and shoots.. and the size is HUGE!! waay too big a file...

The short answer: MPEG4 is more efficient than Motion Jpeg
