Just a little OT, bring some of my mobile phones for general servicing, the Nokia CSO after entering the IMEI no of one of the phones, told me that according to their system, the phone is out of warranty. Lucky for me, I bought along my receipt as I had misplaced my warranty card, else I would have to pay for the servicing.
The reverse is true for me.
my old phone warranty expires on 31st May and I sent in the phone on early June, I did not bring the receipt as it's out of warranty anyway.
But the service center checked and says my warranty is until 30 June in the computer system.
So I got a little "extenstion" of the warranty.
I think it is true that for CERTAIN ITEMS, not sure if it applys to digital cameras, the maker do keep track of the serial no. or batch no. of the products.
If the product is made in Apr 02, like a HDD, it is reasonable to assume that the product will be sold in a few months. Because a few months later the shops should be holding stocks with a Jun or Jul 02 manufacture date.
In fact if you call up the IBM Service Center, you only need the s/no, machine type and model.
(see below, extract from IBM Singapore website)
"Please collect the following information before you call, chat online or request warranty service:
Machine serial number, type, model
Description of the problem
Exact wording of any error messages
Hardware and software configuration information "
They are able to check the warranty based on the above info, no need to ask Date of purchase.
