Unfilled Warranty

Hi, can someone enlighten me on the 'unfilled warranty' concept. To my understanding, warranty cards must be filled and returned within 7-14 days upon purchase. Does this mean that unfilled warranty not sent renders the warranty void? this is puzzling as I do see quite often ad for used goods mentioning 'unfilled warranty'.

thanks & regards
:dunno:

Used goods selling with unfilled Warranty Card might not have valid warranty. Most manufacturers are very smart now, they demand for proof of purchase (receipt) which has the date printed. Even for Canon 10D, out in March 2003, when I sent it in for general cleaning, the CSO asked me for the receipt despite that I have the warranty with me.

Likewise, for Nokia, my experience is they demand to see the receipt instead of warranty card. In fact, even you lost your warranty card, the receipt is enough to demand for free servicing within the warranty period. I usually send in all my mobile for software upgrade every quarterly, and have not been producing my warranty card for a couple of occasion liao, just receipt.

And for those CF that I purchased from AP, I was advised to keep the receipt not warranty card.

In my opinion, sellers using 'unfilled warranty card' in their sale are really unethical. Buyers are at risk that the manufacturers do not honour the warranty.

Don't flame me, just my 2 cents

I also think unfilled warranty is not valid.
sorry, sidetrack a bit, ivor, u mean we can send in our mobile phones as and when we like, to upgrade the software?

Just curious, if you can just use the receipt only, does it means it means that you can just borrow the receipt from anyone who bought the same item as you and use it as warranty proof ?

Sorrie, OT... Of course, not as and when we like lah, if there is nothing to wrong with your mobile phone, or there isn't any software upgrade, then send for what, right??

some shops write the s/no on the receipt.

I suppose they could check the s/no, since they usually are sold within a time frame.

means if the shop never write the serial no. means can :P

also old stock serial no is not conclusive. u coudl ahve bought the last piece from a slow moving shop. only exception is if they recall the batches from time to time

Sorrie OT.. then I guess we better not get things from some 'wu lu' place...

Just a little OT, bring some of my mobile phones for general servicing, the Nokia CSO after entering the IMEI no of one of the phones, told me that according to their system, the phone is out of warranty. Lucky for me, I bought along my receipt as I had misplaced my warranty card, else I would have to pay for the servicing.

The reverse is true for me.

my old phone warranty expires on 31st May and I sent in the phone on early June, I did not bring the receipt as it's out of warranty anyway.

But the service center checked and says my warranty is until 30 June in the computer system.
So I got a little "extenstion" of the warranty.

I think it is true that for CERTAIN ITEMS, not sure if it applys to digital cameras, the maker do keep track of the serial no. or batch no. of the products.

If the product is made in Apr 02, like a HDD, it is reasonable to assume that the product will be sold in a few months. Because a few months later the shops should be holding stocks with a Jun or Jul 02 manufacture date.

In fact if you call up the IBM Service Center, you only need the s/no, machine type and model.
(see below, extract from IBM Singapore website)

"Please collect the following information before you call, chat online or request warranty service:
Machine serial number, type, model
Description of the problem
Exact wording of any error messages
Hardware and software configuration information "

They are able to check the warranty based on the above info, no need to ask Date of purchase.
