Ubin Boars

Sooner or later, regular visitors to Ubin are bound to run into these animals. Normally, they are careful to avoid humans but when they are really hungry - it is a different story. This piggy was so caught up with it's breakfast that it allow me to get up close. Most of the time it's head was in the bushes as it seemed to have found something delicious.

Wild boars generally stay away from people, but they sometimes run into people unexpectedly. Accidents can occur if people try to frighten the wild boars by shouting or even just talking loudly during encounters with the wild boars. As long as they are not disturbed, they are generally harmless. Some of the little piglets are damn cute too!

i have heard the yare very dangerous they could goar people easily. haha the 2nd pic looks like the boar is suspecting

yes do be very careful when you encounter wild boars. met this lady living on ubin last time, she told us her neighbour tied their dog to the tree on one of the nights, the hungry wild boars came out attacking, the next morning there was only a couple of bones and bits of flesh left of the dog.

In 2002 when Chek Jawa was very popular then, many peoples encounterred this friendly wild boar. The wild boar was not scared of people, neither people scared of it.:sweat:

wow nice sighting.. umm from my experince (im a young boy) the wild boar at ubin is not a "human attacking" one...it wont really attack you unless you provoke it ^^

P.S TS was this taken recently? heard the wildboar at ubin passed away recently:cry:

The wild boars I encounter in Tekong is different from Ubin ones... Anyone can clarify that? Those I saw were HUGE!

wild boars actually like to move in groups, the big ones should be the elders ... yah so doesn't mean one sees a single small boar in the open then it's safe, the others may be just around ... there are really big ones on ubin too according to the lady i met, probably don't show themselves as much

So how big are the full grown ones? The ones I saw at Tekong's reclaim land area is like a buffalo's length or bigger except the height not so tall. They have tusks and very hairy back! I first impression is....MONSTER! I only recognised it as a boar because of the smaller ones following it....

The pics I posted were taken on Good Friday last week. The one posted by Andylausk is a different one which I gather had died long ago. Normally, the wild boars I see move about in groups. In fact there were a few others during my above encounter but they had already moved out of sight when I tried to take their pics except for this one which seemed unafraid.

Regarding their sizes, I havent encountered any ones that are 6 ft - yet. All of them were quite mini. Not sure if there are any ones that are larger but if I do encounter them, I will let you know.

Those in Tekong are fierce. Their noses are freaking sensitive to combat rations.

Anyway there is this villager staying near one of the beach(forgot which one) on Ubin, he rears a wild boar named "jackie". It is full grown. Those really interested can go take a look.

The boar in my picture had no tusk and didn't looked big, so I said it is friendly. Otherwise I would have run away first. :bsmilie:

I watched a documentary in which they showed a monster of a boar/feral-pig hybrid, Hogzilla they called it..

Btw, I accidentally got real close to 2 boars fighting when I was doing night prowler on Tekong.. They were huge beasts, at least 2m long each.. (They could have been boar/pig hybrids, come to think of it..) Fortunately they were to busy attacking each other to notice me quietly making my exit.. :sweat:

The female wild boar that greeted visitors of Chek Jawa or Pulau Ubin was called Priscilla. Unfortunately, she passed away last year (if my memory served me correctly). Jackie, a male "wild boar" is kept as a pet by a resident of Pulau Ubin.

Mphil, I was in Pulau Ubin last Sunday. The island was packed with bikers and folks who went to pray. I understand that the bicycles were all rented out on Good Friday!
