got this from all DIMAGE

The two Sigma flashes, the EF 500 DG ST and the EF 500 DG Super, are good news for DiMAGE 5/7/7i//Hi owners.
DiMAGE owners can now choose system flashes from three manufacturers: Minolta, Metz and Sigma.
The two new Sigma models will be available in December.

The ST model is the entry level flash that will compete with the Minolta 3600 HS(D). It is a powerful flash and has all basic features that are needed. The Super model will compete with the likes of Minolta 5600 HS(D) and Metz MZ54. It supports wireless operation and has flexible manual settings.

Sigma specify that the AF assist lamp is supported but I suspect this is only for the Maxxum, not for the DiMAGE's.

I've been told that third party flashes may fry the camera's circuitry. There's always that worry isnt there? Just wishing tt Minolta will come out with a new flash with swivel head tt cost s about the same as the 3600HS. Maybe we should start a petition, since there are so many Minolta users on CS. :D

Standard manufacture FUD to make you buy their own system flashes.

Nearly all modern cameras have electronic triggers and could be damaged by the high voltage 'hot' trigger circuits in some studio flashes or old 'hot shoe' triggered flash units.

Optical isolators are sold to allow such flashes to be used with electronic controlled cameras. Minolta don't have a standard 'hot shoe' anyway, with out an adapter the standard centre pin trigger doesn't connect to the camera.

I am happly using a Canon 299T flash on my D7i with a FS1100 'hot shoe' adapter that is intended for one of Minolta's SLRs and not the D7x. The 299T flash is part of the old Canon T series SLR system. The T cameras were one of the first to have microprocessor based exposure controls. My T70 manual is full of warnings about how non Canon non compatable flash units could damage the camera.

Some one on dpreview swore blind that the FS1100 couldn't possibly work as the Dimage cameras don't have a 'hot shoe' signal, what comes out is serial data for the minotla flash units.

Serial data or 'hot shoe' signal, it's in time with the shutter, and i'm not the only one to have sucess with 3rd party flash units and an FS1100.

Minolta sell a deviced called a PCT-100 for triggering 'sync cord' flash units with a D7 or D7i. The D7Hi has the sync connector built in. I still think it needs an optical isolator with some studio flash units that have high voltage triggers.

Hi matthew,
