I find taking photos of babies very similar to taking wild animal photos in that you can't really get them to pose for you - they can't understand your requests! It takes a lot of patience, lots of snapping and a bit of luck to get the magical shot.
I was taking lots of shots of my new born son (mostly sleeping) when suddenly he laughed for the very first time! I was lucky to have gotten the shot with my Nikon CP950. Here it is:
