[ Technical ] Macro lens on m43

what i'd suggest is take your 45mm macro lens out for a spin first and find out the shortcomings of the lens (eg, focal length, magnification... etc) then decide what you can get to try to rectify the situation. Would help a lot better than relying on our advice

So a 45mm macro lens is good enough?

yes..good enough for me...
so its using a OM lens and a Raynox 150?
Is Extension tube being used?

No extension tube anymore. So Raynox is cheapest way to do it at the moment, I don't remember price here, maybe $150. Of course, if you shoot macro all the time, might as well buy a macro lens like the 45mm Panasonic. Starts at f/2.8 and is only 45mm so not too much DOF unlike a longer lens, and 1:1. Price is more than 5x the Raynox, though. Raynox is nice for the once in a while macro shooter, easy to mount too, just like mounting a lens cap (you already know that).

45mm is good enough, but for some insects such as dragonflies and houseflies nearly impossible unless you can do mind control :D but otherwise, for most insects that run, good enough, probably can rent or borrow to try it out

guess i need to borrow or rent the 45mm macro lens and try out how big the insects will be...

beside deciding whether to buy or not...

thanks..

any sample shots using 45mm macro lens in clubsnap?

Doesn't seem many have posted here on the 4/3 forum, really macro shots that is. Some I found here are more close-up than macro. Except my shots, since I acquired the 45mm for its focal length,AF,and delimiter rather than its macro feature.

Here is one with a cat:

For macro lens, I bought a used macro lens (Vivitar 55mm f2.8) from ebay, get an adapter to mount on my camera. Total cost around $120. About the price of Raynox but I got a true macro lens which do 1:1, much easier to work with than Raynox.

Hi ochsiong,
I'm using the Lumix-Leica 45mm f2.8 Macro lens on my Lumix G-1. You can see some shots that I took last Saturday with Jacobs group in AMK Park with the link below.

The photos may not compare too well with the other sifus using high end Canons, but I think it is more of my lousy handling rather than the G-1 cam & lens. I'm quite new in dSLR photography and macro, just started last Nov. This is my 5th macro outing with CS groups. My hands are not that steady with hand-held (hey - I'm an age 65 grandpa!). I think the Leica 45mm is all you need. You don't have to add extn tubes or Raynox at all. The Leica lens is "mou-tak-teng" man.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Cheers.

Yes. The butterfly and snail were probably 8 to 10 inches from the face of the lens. The two bug photos about 2 to 3 inches.
Cheers.

No, the insects were very co-operative. :bsmilie: Everyone there with macro or converted macro system were shooting insects at very near range.
Cheers.

You can try finding those manual macro lens, with focal length of 90 to 105mm (such as kiron 90mm f2.8, tamron 90mm f2.5 ...). You will need adapter though, but those lenses are good, at 1/4 the price of the 45mm. I'm using Tamron adaptall2 90mm f2.5 on EP2, stacked with Raynox-250 :D. Some simple shots can be viewed here:

I bought the lens from buy&sell. The adapter is bought from ebay. You can search for lenses from ebay too, but may need to bid. Total is about $300 for lens and adapter.

These are shot with the E-PL1 and Sigma 105. The lens is mounted with the MMF2 and it does have AF.
