Hello everyone,

Just curious if there is any kind of "reader" for mini DV tapes? When transferring video clips to storage, we always playback the tape direct from the tape drive on the video cam itself.

is there any device that i can get that is stand-alone that allow a mini dv tape to be inserted and read/transfer to storage via firewire. etc ?

hope to get advice :)

The answer is yes, you can get DV tape decks for capturing, but they are much more expensive than a low end video camera. Unless you need to do a lot of shuttling back and forward and tape searching, a cheap camcorder may be more cost effective.

thanks for the tip jaegersing. just for curiosity sake, do you have knowledge of the brand or online store selling this kind of tape decks?

I have a JVC BR-DV3000 which I bought from VideoPro in SLS a few years back but I think the shop is not around any more. Sony had a couple of DV models as well but they are probably obsolete now. You can still get an HDV deck which is compatible with DV but they are not cheap. Check the Sony Professional website.

My Sony GV-D1000E DV deck is 9 years old and still going strong and I use it everyday! I don't think a camcorder's innards has that kind of lifespan.

wow... just check it out.. the deck is expensive...Thanks for all input.
