Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC

In the USA,
Nikon warranty is 1 year + 5 more years extended...
Tamron warranty is 6 years.
Sigma warranty is 1 year also, but extend extra 2 (non-EX lenses) or 3 years (EX lenses). For a total 3 or 4 years.

So how companies chooses to do with their warranty is very subjective. I brought out the point so the folks here know that they need to bring it in within a month of the warranty expiring to enjoy the additional 2 years. Just a friendly reminder, that's all.

Yup bro...understood. ;)

You have to ask the local distributor that.

Actually i do intend to ask them what the rationale for that is. I am sure they have their reasons. Whether consumers agree or not, it's their business strategy and we should respect that. But would be good to know why.

An update. I spoke to someone at Tamron and they did confirm that the re-registration after 3 years is a must. Their reason being they want to keep track of whether we are still using the lens. I think it's more for information collection purposes and it's a fair enough request.

Also enquired about what if we wish to sell a Tamron lens that is still under warranty, will new owner enjoy the remaining warranty and can re-register for the +2 years (assuming its before the 3rd year). Both answers were yes, as long as new buyer has the warranty card (filled up by original owner of course) and purchase receipt. The warranty obviously begins from date of ORIGINAL purchase, not from when buyer buys from seller.

Hope that clears up some of the air around this issue.

On the whole I find my experience so far dealing with Tamron pretty positive.

Thanks for making the call...I sort of guessed it too, but better to hear from the horse's mouth.

Don't mention it. Happy to contribute my findings.

Thanks for the trouble you went to get this information and sharing it with us. As an earlier poster said, Tamron's warranty is not so bad when you put into perspective. With Canon, I get one year.

Just for comparison, here are the warranty specifications from various camera/lens manufacturers in Canada.

i) Tamron = 6 years
ii) Sigma EX = 10 years straight
iii) Sigma non-EX = 5 years
iv) Tokina = 5 years (if purchased in Canada)
v) Nikon = 2 years (if purchased in Canada)
vi) Canon = 1 year (if purchased in Canada or United States)

It is interesting to note that Sigma has different warranty specifications for non EX and EX lenses whereas Nikon and Canon do not make that differentiation.

As an example I bought a Sigma 12-24 Type II which is considered a non-EX lens. Therefore its warranty limit is 5 years. Conversely, the Sigma 12-24 Type I is designated an "EX" lens therefore its warranty limit is a full 10 years!

how about tamron 24-70 serve for APS-C, such as canon 60D?
i am looking for this lens, but it is still expensive.

not here nor there. better off with the 17-50.

Yah. One third the price n much lighter.

I concur with esoeij. The 17-50 is a far better fit for a crop sensor body. The 24-70 makes it too tight on the wide end and not long enough on the tele end. You effectively get 36-105 on a Nikon or 38.4-112 on a Canon.

It would be ok if you are just doing portraits. There are some who use the 24-105 on APSC and like it.

Anyway...I just ordered the Tammy...I figured that if I'm taking landscapes, it will probably be at f5.6 upwards and the VC will come in handy in low light. I also DO like the pinch type lens cap. ;)

Cool! Which camera are you pairing it with.

Either the 5d3 or the 1d4. I suppose it depends on which I'm bringing out on that day. On the 1D4 the vignetting won't have as big an impact as the 5d3. Anyway, can report the findings after some useage is best.

Yes indeed. And shooting style. Even on apsc like my 60d, I would prefer 24 over 18,as I prefer to frame my image rather than letting it all loose on 18 wide. But then, they still don't have stocks and my holiday trip is soon. Now thinking about 18-135 Stm. Since I'm doing a bit of videos sometimes, it may be a better choice. But I'm trying to avoid ef-s....

i will agree it if i haven't my tokina 12-24 lens.
Camera: canon 60D
lens: tokina 12-24 II, 50 f1.8

base on my camera and lens, i want to buy a standard focal length lens. such as 24-70.

so which lens should be fit me, tamron 28-75 or tamron 24-70 (which expensive now), or others.

between the 2, i will take the 24-70 VC.

you really have not much choices here, either you take the 24-70s from various 3rd parties or hoot a 2nd hand 24-105L.

Standard focal length = somewhere around 24(to around 28) to ~80mm. On a FF. If using a 24-70 on a crop, It's a 38-112. IMO, 12-24 is NOT overlapping with 17-50. If you are really looking at a standard focal length, do consider 15-85 instead. The only downside of 15-85 is it's variable aperture...

That said, like other bros mentioned, it depends on what you usually shoot. If you are mainly shooting portraits, yes, the 24mm or 28mm wide end is good enough. If you are insisting on either 28-75 or 24-70, get the best you can afford. If money is a big factor, go with 28-75.

Got my new baby!

and it comes with the lens cap holder:

It seems to back focus with the 5D3, so I adjusted it then its nice and sharp.
AF is a snap, it just gets the lock and click almost instantly.

Now to get more familar with the lens!
