Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC

5 years local warranty but the place is SUPER ulu. Some part of Changi biz park area.

Thanks. So it's worth paying the extra premium for a local set. I think international warranty is only 1 yr if buy from hong kong even tho it's cheaper according to price.com.hk.

changing business park is not ulu at all man. it is where the expo and changi point is..

Aiyoh, this conclusion of this review worked out better for the tamron than the canon.

The results show the Canon has an edge in sharpness in the wider end, but at 70mm, the Tamron has better edge definition.
Actually the difference in numbers is not a huge gap that I would write off the Tamron, especially considering the price differential.

Canon needs to rethink their pricing strategy. If it includes IS, then arguably the price is more acceptable, like the 70-200II.

Someone mentioned it's actually an additional 15 minutes walk from Viacom or something. Either way, it's a minor inconvenience.

Well not too sure how much HK is selling for but since I felt the price was acceptable to me and it came with 5 year local warranty i didn't really look around at international sites.

Another thing was I did a google search on the second element dropping off issue and results were mostly regarding lensrental, com's article. They did qualify it by saying the lens does get shipped around a lot so that could contribute significantly to that issue.

Anyway not losing much sleep over that. When it comes send in for repair :P

IIRC price.com.hk is about S$1400.

Ah ok. That's about $288 less than local.

please take note that Tamron's 5 year warranty requires a registration after the first 3 years warranty has ended.

From Tamron Singapore website:

The Tamron lens comes with an automatic 3 years warranty and to qualify for the additional 2 years warranty, please bring the lens to GSH service center for re-registration within 1 month after the end of the 3 years warranty period

Thanks for sharing this 'hidden information' from Tamron.

This is horribly tricky. Who will remember after 3 years? I assume that all their lenses are managed under the same kind of warranty requirement.

Regardless, it still is much better than Canon or Nikon's warranty status.

Very sneaky move. I better set my calendar to remind me. Hahah.

strange...why the need for this extra step?

Is the extension of additional two years warranty is subjected to the condition of the lens after 3 years? Is that the reason they are asking to bring along the lens to the service centre for evaluation at the time of warranty extension? Is there any hidden clause about this? I think it could be possible.

Gee I frigging hope not. Then again if it's normal use it should look alright. If you are going into a war zone then the Tamron certainly isn't the best choice.

Yes I wonder about this warranty issue as well. Let's look at a worst case scenario...

The Tamron lens is carefully kept in a dry box and well taken care through its initial 3 years. There have been no knocks, nicks or scratches. You were aware of Tamron's insistence that the lens be looked at after the 3 year period. You faithfully bring it in exactly 7 days after the expiry of the 3 year warranty but still 23 days before the obligatory period ends.

Tamron looks at your lens and determines that based on its assessment, they feel that your lens is too risky to warranty for another 2 years and decline it. You politely ask, "why". They say that based on their assessment there a component that has deteriorated enough that a 2 year warranty must be declined. You then suggest that they should fix it and they say that it will cost $325. You say, "but its under warranty". They remind you that the warranty ended 7 days ago.

Again, a worst case scenario... and likely will not happen. But based on the existing warranty agreement, it is not entirely outside the realm of possibility.

Hi,

thanks for your reply, wat you said is really very very CB situation....but it is not completely impossible...any bros here that done NS, will know situations like this, "FAIL TO ENSURE SAFETY" or other situations / really a "catch 22" situation....\ same theory...\
so the morale of the story, gotta set the calender 1 wk before the actual expiry of the 3 yr, bring down your camera for "examation" ....MAKE the staff / engineer write EMAIL / confirmation that they will extend the warranty.
u gotta cover BACKSIDE rite?
then after the official three years, then u make SECOND trip down....
very very very CB ...but if u after 5 yr warranty...that is one way....

*like* Yes if anything NS taught us to CYB!

You know, I don't know what's the fuss all about when typical manufacturer's warranty all expire after 1 year.
Here you have a 3P manufacturer willing to provide 3+2 years additional warranty and you complain about the +2 years? :o

Kenneth67C the point is why can't they offer straight up 5 years?

You have to ask the local distributor that.

In the USA,
Nikon warranty is 1 year + 5 more years extended...
Tamron warranty is 6 years.
Sigma warranty is 1 year also, but extend extra 2 (non-EX lenses) or 3 years (EX lenses). For a total 3 or 4 years.

So how companies chooses to do with their warranty is very subjective. I brought out the point so the folks here know that they need to bring it in within a month of the warranty expiring to enjoy the additional 2 years. Just a friendly reminder, that's all.
