Tamron's new 24-70mm f2.8 VC

Am thinking whether this is a better choice than a used Canon 24 70L f2.8 USM...

Well it depends. A used Canon will still command good value and you can probably pick one up around 1.6k. Price MAY drop when the Mk2 is out. Also the weather sealing is definitely better than the Tamron. Not forgetting the 77mm filter size. But the weight....... Zzzzzzzzz. Hahahaha.

Yeah, it's nickname "brick". Are you using the Tamron on Canon FF?

Yep. Using it on 5D3. I have read about vignetting on FF but haven't experienced any major issues with that as I haven't had much time to go out and shoot lately.

Now that the Canon mk2 is out, just waiting for a comparison shoot out...

Took the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC out for a test run past few days. Didn't really test the lens to its limits but some thoughts:

~ AF isn't as fast as the Canon or Nikon equivalent, but then again price isn't the same as well, so can't compare.
~ The VC (Vibration Compensation) is stated as up to 3 stops, which I think is pretty optimistic. Probably closer to 2 stops to be honest.
~ Weight-wise, lighter than the Canon 24-70 Mk1 but slightly heavier than the Mk.2 which is just released.
~ I don't like the way the lens zooms. To zoom in, you need to turn the zoom ring to your RIGHT, which feels odd to me despite me coming from Nikon. Maybe cos with Nikon I have mostly shot with primes except for a Tokina 12-24 which never really saw much use past 13mm.
~ At f/2.8 it's a little bit soft if pixel peeping, but on the whole, acceptable.

Other than the above "quirks", the lens is decent for what I paid.

Some shots taken with the 24-70. No post processing except crop or resize to 800 X 533 pixels.

Kenneth67C, most places I asked was $1688 but all didn't have stock, so I got mine from MS Color since I was in the area and they had stock.

Wow, pretty expensive compared to Europe where tax is much higher. In Germany it's abot $1500 including 19% USt.

Not too sure man. I kept the box already and didn't check but if I am not wrong it's local warranty only.

Unless you are there or travel there often, the difference is pretty inconsequential IMO.

I'm not suggesting to buy it there. That wouldn't make sense. Just saying dealers here make a lot of money.

I won't know that because I don't know their cost price.

I asked TK and they were out of stock too and could not say for sure when the stocks would be in. That was around 2 weeks back. Perhaps try calling them tomorrow?

Cons:
- 82mm filter
- When you remove rear lens cap and look into rear element, the circuitry is exposed when zoom in (not an issue if you have lens mounted to camera body of course, just need to take care when changing lens)
- Zoom ring quite stiff but should get better over time.
- Heavy but not as bad as the Canon 24-70 mk1

For the canon 24-70 mk2, it's also using the 82mm filter am I right?
