The latest digital camera mag had a review of wide lenses 11-18.
And they put Sigma and Tamrons 11-18 better than most of the original lenses, only Canons wide has a slight edge on image quality.
Sonys own 11-18 actually ranked as one of the worst.

...

Sigma has no 11-18.

Best distortion handling for a UWA zoom: Sigma 12-24
Best sharpness: Tokina 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Nikkor 12-24, Canon 10-22 (very close fight. all the above models perform very well here.)
Most solid build: Tokina 12-24
Lightest weight: Tamron 11-18

Highest CA levels: Tokina 12-24
Highest chance of getting a copy that's soft: Tamron 11-18 (some copies of this lens have been found soft, even at f/8)

Haven't read much about the Sony 11-18...

My take on the third-party vs. original:

If the original manufacturer produces a lens that either exhibits far-superior performance or has no equivalent within the third-party manufacturer's catalogue, then get the original.

Should the third-party manufacturer come up with a lens that the original manufacturer does not produce, or produces to a mediocre standard, then I would go for the third-party product.

dont buy a third party lens...such a waste of money. save up and get the original.

Care to elaborate on your statement, that you make with such conviction?

checked with mscolor...
they selling @$710 but i guess it's not the best price yet.....

wondering if getting either 50mm f1.4 or 28mm f2.8 (both by sony) and maybe 75mm-300mm lens will be a better investment...

For that price might as well get sigma 18-200 OS... the OS is much much much more useful than the extra 50mm...

250mm @ max aperture of f/6.3 is too limiting for my liking. Need to maintain high enough shutter speed to prevent motion blur and having a small max aperture.

Sony have SSS (anti-shake sensor built in), so don't need the OS ;)

If you don't mind changing lens, prefer more portrait or low light shots and look more into better quality of the image, then probably. 50mm f/1.7 will be a cheaper option compare to f/1.4.

however if you are looking into a all in one lens, 18-250mm is the way to go. Or add on a 50mm lens just for portrait and low light shots.

50mm f/1.7? any brand? any idea of the cost?

minolta, 2nd price range from S$140-200 depend on condition, can be found in B&S.

mmm.....sounds a lot cheaper than a new 50mm f/1.4 but what is the difference in the max shutter speed between the 50mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.7?

that is a lot deeper...haha....

f/1.4 and f/1.7 are about a third of a stop apart.

Full f/stops are as follows:

f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32

f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32

so that means the impact on the achievable shutter speed between the two prime lens are like a third of a stop difference (if shutter speed got 1/3 stop diff?)

Actually it's 2/3 stop, between f/1.4 & f/1.7, there's another step of f/1.6, don't know how they count one

mmmm.....ok....all these calculations are giving me sweaty palms...

now i am considering between this lens and the tamron AF17-50mm F/2.8 (i think it starts from 17). both abt same price and dec is coming = bonus coming......

wondering if i should get the travel lens or the "fast" zoom lens first?:dunno:
