The latest digital camera mag had a review of wide lenses 11-18.
And they put Sigma and Tamrons 11-18 better than most of the original lenses, only Canons wide has a slight edge on image quality.
Sonys own 11-18 actually ranked as one of the worst.
...
Sigma has no 11-18.
Best distortion handling for a UWA zoom: Sigma 12-24
Best sharpness: Tokina 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Nikkor 12-24, Canon 10-22 (very close fight. all the above models perform very well here.)
Most solid build: Tokina 12-24
Lightest weight: Tamron 11-18
Highest CA levels: Tokina 12-24
Highest chance of getting a copy that's soft: Tamron 11-18 (some copies of this lens have been found soft, even at f/8)
Haven't read much about the Sony 11-18...
My take on the third-party vs. original:
If the original manufacturer produces a lens that either exhibits far-superior performance or has no equivalent within the third-party manufacturer's catalogue, then get the original.
Should the third-party manufacturer come up with a lens that the original manufacturer does not produce, or produces to a mediocre standard, then I would go for the third-party product.
