I have a D200 and recently bought a Tamron 17-50mm with built in AF motor (A16NII)... It has locked up on me intermittenly and I would have reset the camera to have it working properly again. Sometimes even have to reset a few times to get it to work.. HAve no issue with the Nikkor 80-200..

Anyone else experience such problem???

Check the contacts at the base of the lens. They may have some dirt.

tried that... Didn't solve the problem...
Need to do an extended test on another nikon body...

What are the chances of a conflict with the camera body?? ie not supplying enuf power to the lense motor???

I experienced this kind of problem before with Angenieux lens on D2X but not on D200. What's the firmware you're using? If it's not already the latest, maybe you can update the firmware to see if the problem persists.

More like the CPU timing is not as tight as it should. The problem with 3rd party lenses is that the data communication is reverse engineered so they may not get everything right. This is especially true if you bought the lens before D200 is released and Nikon adds certain commands which the lens CPU doesn't understand.

If updating D200's firmware doesn't solve the problem, you may need to send the lens back to Tammy to get the lens CPU/firmware to be updated.

try unlock and locking it..

for mine.. used on both D200 and D80~ after while the issue is gone..
