Reviews only concentrate on the ergonomics and technical capabilities of the camera. Given Canon's reputation, they won't sell a camera that is so unusable that it handicaps your creativity in photography. It's targeted at the entry-level market segment who is owning a DSLR camera for the first time and so may not appreciate the better functions the amateurs may miss.
Ergonomics-wise, the 400D may be a bit too small and uncomfortable to handle, but as I've said, it's not so bad that it impedes your photography experience.
If you are not comfortable with the camera then don't buy it. If you've already bought the camera and just want to justify your purchase, I think it's a very bad habit to do post-purchase research.
