Hello all is there any difference between a war time summitar vs a normal summitar? lens that comes w the word, war time is it refering to the year of the lens manufactured?

Wartime Summitar >>>> no coating...old school aperture scale (i.e. f2, 2.22, 3.2, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5)...round aperture hole step down
Later Summitar model >>> coating...new standardized aperture (i.e. f2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16)...some still round aperture...much later hexagonal aperture hole step down

Thanks alot :)

May i ask again what is the main difference for lens w coating vs lens without coating? Contrast?

lens without coating flare easier then lens with coating. that's the main difference I know.
not sure pictures will look different or not.
maybbe someone else can add on to that?

coated = better light transmission (higher contrast), better resistance to flare
multi-coated = even better light transmission (even higher contrast), even better resistance to flare

2 types of Summitars:

wartime: not coated with old feet reading and "dog-leg" aperture blades...

later: coated with better flare control and meter reading and with round aperture blades.

That being said.. Look for those with bubbles inside, they have better market price.

Thanks alot :)

pikapig, our queries have been answered :)

Thanks guys!

Oh yes, I should add that these shots are from the same lens as the first 2-3 in this thread.
The sharpness is back after a CLA by Chiif's. .

The lens is back to its prime after a good clean-up and recalibration. Thank you Chiif!

This image of my friend Roger (trying to act cool) is made with an uncoated summar (M9's B&W mode, no PP). Somehow, it looks quite different from those posted above. Don't know why:dunno:

Shouldn't it be softer and more flare?
