An inspiring piece of article on streets with pictures to share, featuring the likes of...

Severin Koller
"… I fell in love with street photography the moment I started analogue photography. I never took portraits. I never did journalism. I never dared to do street photography the classic way. Why? Because it's not possible with a digital... the feeling is missing...."

Michael Kaiser
"....“Seeing” is the important part. Light, lines, fore- and background, movement, things and people that happen to interact for a second. If you don’t see these moments, feel them, live in them, all the time, with or without camera, then Street Photography is probably not for you. The “reacting” part is craft mainly...."

Matthew Craig
"...street photography is a tradition. The art has been carried down by those who cannot take another step before capturing that moment. This tradition of capturing the world round us, for the sole purpose of retaining the unique situations that make life charming and exciting, is what separates street photography from the rest...."

and of course...

"...A true street photographer is armed with a Leica M body and a roll of tri-x..."

Just some excerpts... read on and be inspired!

Its a good article but too bias towards Leica glass I would say.

There is a huge world of lenses out there.

I dont agree with shooting from the hip though.......... Not a big fan of that

Other than those, its a good street article

This has been out some time back. Chris Weeks did this when he was still only doing streed photography using film and in that article, he dissed digital users.

He then followed this up with a video on vimeo titled "Documenting the Human Condition" after some time where he no longer disses digital cameras as he's already using an M9.

It's all interesting until he starts babbling about Leica, the glass and the rangefinder-only approach.

Bruce Gilden is a Magnum photographer. And a street Shooter who uses Flash at close range ion people's face.
Come on, its okay to be opinionated, no ?

it takes balls of steel to do what he does.

i just find flashing in people's faces abit rude thats all. wouldnt like it if someone came straight to my face and blinded me for a split second.

What matters is what happens after the photo is taken. If you present with a smile, a thank you and assured them that the photo is used as form of art, most people would not be mad at you. Though asian culture is slightly different from the western, I personally feel that it helps if you dressed up like a tourist, wear a hat and look slightly different from the norm. Then people will take you less seriously and let you have their picture taken.

The worst thing to do is to try to be discrete and hide this hide that. It's not a crime to take pictures in the public. The more you try to hide, the more people will be suspicious of you.

Cannot agree more.

Again, I love Leica, I would buy all their glasses if I can afford, but that statement just too over rated. Not possible with digital? If he never even try Tri-X plugin for Photoshop then I'm sorry he's in denial! Just joking. But then what is Tri-X feeling? The god of street photography set that rule? If we don't do street photography with that "feeling" our lives will be shorten? I rather recommend http://clarenceloi.wordpress.com/2008/07/15/the-abc-of-street-photography/
