Hi folks,
Some of my equipement was stolen from my apartment last Thrusday.

Canon 10D with battery pack
Canon 100-400L IS (Serial number 237066)
Canon 50 1.4

Plus memory cards of me and my wife in Japan... :(

Of course I called the police and they are working on it. But I was wondering, where someone could try to sell such equipement?

Do you have any idea?

Thanks guys...

I feel for your loss, bro. I know how it feels. My close friend had his appt broken into in Australia and lost most of his valuables, including his entire camera system, electric dry cabinet and all.

Anyway, there is a lost & stolen sticky thread. You might want to post your stolen items there. :bheart:

Good luck, hopt you can my some miricle recover your items.

 OMG.. I feel for you man, not so much about the equipment, they can be replaced over time.. But more because of the lost photos  Hope you catch the *******..

You can try informing the 2nd hand shops like TCW, the one beside Cathay Photo, and those on the higher floor same bldg as Cathay Photo.. Thiefs would typically want to clear them off quickly, so 2nd hand shops would be the 1st place they would go..

Sorry to hear that.

Just want to share. My friend in Sydney lost his old film camera by robbery. But because he have insurance, he buy a new D200.

It is better if you have S/N of the camera.

Regards,
Arto.

FYI 2nd hand camera shops want yr details when you sell them stuff.

Secondly, they usually take items on consignment. They leave the stuff on the shelves (for all to see) for months sometimes. In the interrim, you get no money.

Now if you were a thief, would you still sell to these shops knowing that:
1) Your details are recorded (NRIC, HP etc)
2) The item will probably be displayed for all (including the victim to see)
3) It could take months before you see any money.

You would want to make sure you get the serial no., because that's the only sure way to prove that the equipment is indeed yours.

I saw this guy once at a local 2nd hand shop at P Plaza, who was trying to sell a bag of Nikon lenses I strongly suspected were stolen. He appeared to know nothing about the lenses, and carried them in a regular duffel bag, actually chucked in haphazardly would be more like it rather than carried. He didn't know what the prices of the lenses were and was quite agreeable to selling them at way below market prices. He sold a Nikon AFD 20/2.8 for 200, for instance. I didn't say anything though, unfortunately.

bottom line is,
I don't think it's that hard to sell stolen equipment, because most of the time, shopkeepers looking to make a quick profit wouldn't really care. You could try looking at the usual places around the peninsula area, and cross check with the serial nos.

If you're interested, a 100-400L IS appeared at Alex photo recently, and a 10D+Grip appeared at TCW. Good luck.

Hmmm... can't speak for all the used dealers cos I only patronise reputable ones. There are of course "black sheep"

But these shops are liable to get charged for peddling stolen goods which usually carries a jail term. Registered used equipment dealers are required to keep records of the customers they buy items from to facilitate contact tracing and deter peddling of stolen goods. Those that don't are asking for trouble. If they do not keep tabs on the customers they buy from, it is taken that they are "knowingly" trading stolen goods and will be charged accordingly.

Anyway, if you do see your items on sale, contact the police immediately.
