The New Minolta SSM GD Lens is officially onsale today in Japan.

Obtained the following price from a Japanese site:
http://www.imcomz.jp/lens/minolta_lens.htm

70-200/2.8 GD SSM 297500 Yen 3?% off
300/2.8 GD SSM 675000 Yen 3?%off

Quick calculation using today exchange rate from Yahoo ($1US = 119
Yen):

Assume 30% off (worst case)
70-200/2.8 GD SSM 297500 Yen 30% off = US$1739
300/2.8 GD SSM 675000 Yen 30%off = US$3947

Assume 39% off (best case)
70-200/2.8 GD SSM 297500 Yen 39% off = US$1516
300/2.8 GD SSM 675000 Yen 39% off = US$3440

The two new GD SSM lenses will be selling somewhere in between
US$1,516-1,739 and US$3,440-3,947

Current B&H price for Minolta 80-200/2.8 G is US$1,180 and
300/2.8 G $3,650

It'll be interesting to see the price of these new lenses when they
arrive in North America.

Regards,
Ed

ummm... yes, quite a bit really...

let's take your best case as an example:
70-200/2.8 GD SSM 297500 Yen 39% off = US$1516, which is approximately S$2.6k

canon's 70-200 2.8L is going for like S$2000... the IS version is around S$2.8k.

yap, really expansive. Wish they would price it more competitively and affordable. But the important thing to ask is whether the quality is better than the 80-200? Seems to me in another forum that the MTF for 80-200 is better than 70-200 SSM.

But MTF more on picture sharpness and contrast. what is important is the owner of the shutter finger right:dunno:

We're talking about prime lenses here, so that explains the steep pricing.

Canon and Nikon around the same price as well for L and VR lenses.

Look out for their DSLR soon.;)
