i think it's those big-ass infra red beam lamps you can find in front of compact pns cameras...

i think that's wat A700 uses too.. older technology?

Nope, those aren't really very effective... they just beam light to illuminate the subject...

The infra-red lamps referred to are the red lamp found on a HS5600 or SONY F-56 flash... there is a large red lamp with a reflector inside the red cover clearly seen. This shines a red light with a clear pattern that enables the camera to quickly focus even in total darkness...
