The files from Canon HV20 are with m2t file extensions. I use HDVSplit to download the files from camcorder to PC. Is there some simple (and preferrably free :) ) software that I can use to cut a section out of a m2t file, or join 2 m2t files into one, without doing rendering or any sort of CPU/memory intensive job? I don't plan to do any other type of editing on the m2t files. Thanks.

So far the only program I know of that does this is Vegas Pro 8, which is not free or even cheap. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a freebie available though.

google for streamclip which can convert any file formats to an editable format which will not affect the source video files. And it is free and open source.

Would this not cause the output files to be rendered though?

I saw this product VideoRedo, not sure if it is what I am looking for and supports m2t files although it mentions about MPEG2.

actually all NLEs today can handle HDV m2t. Unless u r working with 25P then there will be a difference. HDV spilt works well to capture, spilt and edit. The latest Vegas 8 Pro is pretty smooth. I'm sure Avid, FCP or Premire P will do it as well.

Hi engr. Yes you are correct, but in this case he wants to split/join/save the files without recompression. I think this is not so common yet (although I could be wrong). Vegas 8 can do it but Vegas 7 cannot.
