Of course it won't correct wrong technique... but it does improve the feel somewhat. The shape of the soft-shutter release also has some effect. Go concave if you prefer to use the finger tip. Go convex if you prefer (or able to adapt) to using the middle portion of your index finger, similar to how you would pull the trigger on a rifle.

Personally I'm not quite sure if it does reduce shake or not, but it does improve the feel. So that's enough for me

With the soft shutter release, I actually use less strength on my fingers to fire the shutter. :thumbsup:

less shutter pressure and smoother 'action' means less potential for vertical camera shake, which is great for longer handheld exposures. i really notice the difference in taking a photo with the IIIf (no soft release) compared to M6 and M8 which do have one.

I think the difference is significant. At least on mine. No regrets and buy spare. They can unscrew easily. I got mine from old man at De Camera or Chiif who sells the same piece.

there are lots of verities of soft releases, alside of concave vs convex, they also come in varying sizes. just to name a few: luigi (concave / convex), leica, nikon (ar-9), de camera consultant (same as chiif, concave / convex), tim isaac(beep / boop / bip / bug / beast), rapidwinder...

does it work for me? i like one on the m8, but prefer to go without it on the m7. it depends on how you "feel" the trigger, esp how comfortable you are at finding the tigger point.

It's actually just a smoother finger-motion. There is no change to the amount of strength required, etc etc...

cactus: on a side note, i hate my M8's release all the same. with or without the SSR :bsmilie: the slight *thuck* for the meter and before it actually fires is really annoying, compared to the very smooth release on the film Ms.

It does make the shutter more "hair-trigger", I've had some shots that were taken accidentally because of this .

I just found out there are also soft releases (called soft buttons) for digital cameras (dslrs, etc) ! Looks like those 3M Bump Ons ...

This is a 1 second exposure, hand held, with the M7 and using Tom A's softie (50 ASPH, Kodachrome). Without the softie, the same results would not have been possible hand held.

Just a note to anyone looking to get a Luigi soft release: if you get it in any colour other then the original base metal silver, be prepared for the paint to flake off very fast. I got a red one a few months ago and the red paint was peeling off within a week. That said, I sent him an email with pictures and he refunded me immediately, so that's a plus. Very good service. :thumbsup:

I just got these yesterday, and really like their feel. They are slightly concave and have a soft feel to them.

Interestingly, the chrome one feels better than the black one (maybe it is the surface material), even though they are supposed to be the same thing.
