Slow Travel :: Kluang by Train

It has been on my mind for awhile. In this day & age of supersonic jets and quick getaways, I had been toying with the idea of slow travel. To explore by train seemed to dovetail very much with the spirit of adventure and film photography. The recent news that the KTM train station in Tanjong Pagar will close in July this year jolted me out of my inertia. My goal was SG to BKK by train but I haven't been on the train in ages so decided to organise a short exploratory day trip on the train with some of the RFF folks.

The day trip destination was Kluang. A comfortable 2 hour plus journey each way with many trains stopping at the Kluang station on the way back. My companions were RWC and HOC. Itinerary? None. We sort of read up a little and I had some tips by Zoomp but we all decided to just go where our feet took us.

My gear:
Olympus 35SP, with Trix @ 200
Rolleiflex, with TriX @ 400
Hexar AF, with Fujicolor Pro 160S
iPhone, my only digital camera on the trip

- Both TriX rolls were developed with Diafine 3+3
- Yes, no Leica :P

This will soon be a thing of the past...

so HOC readily posed with his newly arrived, newly polished 1935 Leica Standard.

Finally arrived. For that minute or so, the station was a hive of activity by the tracks.

We stopped at the Kluang Rail Coffee for an energy boost. It was supposed to be a tourist attraction.
It certainly was popular with a constant stream of customers. Kopi was too sweet for me and the kaya toast on a bun certainly had a generous helping of butter!

Couldn't resist taking a shot of this little boy

Niceeeeee!!!

I also want to do such a trip. Can share the details and costs?

excellent coverage!

PS. I shot Bangkok Railway Station on Sunday as well...fingers crossed that it will turn out OK.

We took the ER2 @ 0800hrs. Cost was SGD16 to Kluang.
Return leg SS2 @1359 hrs (it actually arrived closer to 1459hrs). We "upgraded" ourselves to the first class cabin. Cost was MYR26. Much more comfortable.

It was blazing hot when we set off to the town centre. Shooting at ISO160 made more sense so the Hexar finally got its run after a long while. This was the first time I was using the Fuji Pro 160S so I was happy to shoot just to see how the colours would turn out.

Tailoring services seemed to be a popular trade

Damn fast bro!

I've managed to scanned all my films last night. Tonight will be post processing in LR3 then I'll post here.

Thanks for organising the trip. Cant wait for the longer trip!

Anyway guys, I learnt my lesson at the Kluang train station, the damn train only stops for a min! Which Melvin & Thomas was boarding, I was shooting a few kids & the next thing I know, the train was gonna start to move off without me on the return leg home! hahahahahaha!

Ran for the train!!!!!!!!!!!

Show more pictures man... i think i will plan for a trip soon :)

Hey guys, thanks for sharing. Nice coverage!

What a great idea too - I shall go for the same trip this coming weekend, or maybe the next.

The tickets are bought at the station itself?

Yep, you can buy the tickets from the station itself

I love the contrast in the colours presented at the back of this house.

Can someone tell me if it is a characteristic of this film - in the shade, the colours are cooler than when shot outdoors?
